    Agreed.

I'd argue that over the last 6 games or so Pennant looks the most likely to create goals for us. He suddenly believes he can beat people 1 on 1 and is doing so. If he can continue this form and become consistant I think he becomes a good option.

Needs to use his left more, but getting better with more confidence.

He has done well recently but we havent played anyone decent for a while so its hard to say he is gonna be great. If he plays against Chelsea in the first leg then we will see if he can make the step up. He isnt worht the money we paid yet but he can stay for the squad and play against the likes of Boro, City and mean nothing European games.

I think Pennant is making a bloody good case for himself to start against Chelsea.

          How about a midfield of...

          Gerrard------Mascherano----Alonso------Pennant

Yep, Gerrard on the left. I'm going way off-topic here but Pennant is in genuinely good form and he's making a case for himself. He could start.

Chelsea have a clear weakness at right-back and, remember, Gerrard played on the left at their place in the league in an attempt to expose Boulahrouz. Although we lost 1-0, we created a lot of genuine opportunities and if we played like that again we'd be taking at least a scoring draw back to Anfield.

Like the sound of that midfield for the away leg.

It said "You now have access, please reply if this has worked"

i've seen gerrard play on the left this season, didn't look good at all. As for pennant if he's got so much better i reckon we sell him for a profit....maybe villa or sunderland!! He's mediocre nothing more

Not a bad idea. Sunderland would go for it I reckon.

You'd think so, but people on the net tend to suffer from comparing our team to United or Chelseas.

First the vital cog was a Keane type player, we got Ince and that made no difference. Then along came RVN and we now needed a 30 goal a season player. Then along came Chelsea and it was a top keeper and powerful striker. Now Ronaldo is flavour of the year and its a goal scoring wing wizard we need.

What LFC need is a team that wins games. Now if Pennant gets enough assists he doesn't need to score. Pennant is a good player who should be given a season before he is judged. He is not a Ronaldo and he is not a Robben. And he never will be. These days that type of player will cost about £20m. JP cost £7.5, which was the best we could get.

Maybe Quaresma would do better. Maybe he wont. Quaresma has already had a shot at the big time and was dumped by Barca cos he wasn't anywhere near good enough. It wouldn't be the first time Barca are wrong, but they're not wrong often. Now Quaresma is back in his homeland and is playing in a poor league. He gets plenty of the ball and plenty of space and is king of the hill again. Now all of a sudden he's everyperson who has ever had access to Youtube dream signing.

Granted Quaresma has looked good against poor teams in portugal, well Pennant has looked good against poor teams in England. Quaresma also had a decent game v Chelsea scoring a decent goal. Well so did Pennant and his finish weren't bad either.

                          Rafa, it's over to you.
                          Forwards.......

im glad its not just me that thinks Quaresma is over rated! i think hes a good player in a **** league, certainly wouldnt be happy with anything over 6 or 7 mill for the little posing barsteward. Quite like the look of nani mind, or even schweinsteiger from bayern as a wide player...its going to be interesting to see who Rafa likes. In Rafa I certainly trust.

                              Good post Dannyman

The bottom line is at the moment Pennant is consistantly putting in good performances and creating whilst other more established players in the team aren't. I think we can do better, and Pennant might not continue to play at this level against better opponents, but he at very least warrants a place in the squad.

Good points on Quaresma too. Fantastic player where he is but it's difficult to say whether he could bring that kind of form to the Prem. He'd need a lot of time to adapt if nothing else IMO. Alves on the other hand strikes me as more tenacious, I think he'd adapt that little bit quicker. Same risks apply to him though. The signings we're looking to make this summer are probably the hardest to get right unfortunately.

You are certainly right there. The bigger the expenditure the bigger the risk. It seems we will be splashing out this year and its important that Rafa brings the right players in.

I always say players should get a full season they are judged. Unfortunately, the bigger the price tag, the more pressure there is to be an instant hit. Are current squad is not good enough to challenge for the title, so its vital we get players who have the best chance of settling quickly. Its why I have suggested Henry would be a good signing on other threads. Lennon would be my ideal signing at RW for the record.

But no transfer arrives without risk. And no player is guaranteed to settle. I mean FFS, Unsworth couldn't even settle at Aston Villa and thats only down the road from where he eventually ended up!
