Thanjk you.

You said that the defence was better now than it was then. Again I say the names: Hughes, Thompson, Neal, Hansen. Only one of current back four compares with any of them in my opinion and I've seen more than just the odd replay of the teams from the 70's and 80's.
As for the clips you've seen they are hardly likely to show good defensive performances in deference to loads of goals! Yes we retained the ball better but we were a better all round team unit then - hence our league domination.
Ok then, my mistake, I say our defencive system is possibly better now than it was then, if this team could retain the ball in the same way high up the field it would be an even better team defensively too.
I dont need it pointed out to me that we were a better team then either two European cups along with a league title in 2 seasons is testiment to that.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'
"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.
* After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs
Bazza, give up. The old fogies have nothing better to do than argue with you (BTW You are wrong )
i think more misinterpreted

I'm and old bugger, I've seen them all. Reina is better than Clemence.
You should judge a player at LFC in these terms when they've been there for at least 4 seasons or more.
Dudek had a great start, and judging a keeper on clean sheets would mean Westerveld is our 5th best keeper ever. I'm sure you have other reasons for saying Reina is better though.
For the record I used to think Westerveld was ok, and the money spent on Dudek and Kirkland hardly improved us in that department. As Dudek helped win the CL and Kirky was unlucky I'll not moan too much.

I judge them based on their quality. Pepe is better than Clemence.

Fair do's matey.
As I said though I think that we should leave the comparisons of players until they've been at the club a while. Earlier this season there were idiots debating whether or not he deserved a place in the starting line up, let alone whether or not he is better than Clemence was.
I think Reina's better than Clemence, purely based on the fact that we now use completely different balls with different dynamics than those used back in the 70s/80s.
Clemence was a great 'keeper, no doubting that at all, but today's goalies have to judge much sharper swerves from balls that are being hit with more power with thanks to all these 'better' boots that turn you into Pele if you buy them.
So put Reina back in the team when Clemence was in top form and he would do just as well as ol' Ray, but if Ray came into today's game he would certainly struggle.

But for the vast majority of Clemence's time with us most goalies didn't even wear gloves, whatever the weather. When they started to become popular they were really nothing more than the covering off a table tennis bat fixed onto some ill-fitting cotton mitt. Can't see that Reina (or any current keepers) would be able to cope with that as well as the likes of Clemence.
Similarly Reina would have had kittens every time a cross came in, as the level of protection given to keepers in the 70's was nothing like it is today. Let's face he has the occasional tendency to flap at crosses as it is, God help him if a Joe Jordan or Mickey Droy was attempting to bulldoze him into the back of the net.
Clemence's athleticism and agility was far in advance of most keepers of the time, and he was the forerunner of the goalie-as-sweeper approach to goalkeeping. Hypothetical of course, but I don't think he'd have too many problems in today's game.
I think Reina needs a few more seasons under his belt before he can be put in the same league as Clemence.
