Neill would be a good squad player, and u certainly wouldnt see the sort of dive that we saw from Jan last season.
And for those that say he a poor player, he was one of the best defenders at the World Cup, and had a few big-money strikers in his pocket.

You can see what Rafa is doing, he might not be buying the most popular players, but he is buying competitors, guys that absolutely hate to lose.

Would nt normally stand up for someone who broke the leg of a Liverpool player, but in the case of Lucas Neil there are some other factors to comsider.

Conceded, I do have bias, but when the Aussie lads got home from the World Cup to big plaudits, Neil got a lot of attention due to the disputed last minute penalty incident v Italy.

His demeanour and words showed some maturity and leadership characteristics. From my recollections he was looking forward to some quiet family time in the country, and when asked of the 'dive' by the Italian, he said something along the lines of, he 'wasn t raised to behave and/or play the game in that spirit'. Not word for word but you get the idea.

None of this excuses the challenge on Carra, but, hard players can be good squad members and we have had our share of tough tackling players who had to grow up at some point - Souness's career was littered with indescretions prior to joining us.

That said, Neil was given huge wraps for his overall World Cup performances and there was some talk of a link to Barca with Johann Neeskans going there from the Aussie set up.

If he is developing into a quality fullback perhaps some consideration needs to be given to what he might provide to us in the Premiership. How might Rafa mould him ? Given some of our recent transfer activity the thought of Neil in a red shirt cannot be as unpallatable as some ?

                  I agree Mr Wayne.

I hated Lucas for what he done to Carra. However, in the last 2 seasons he has matured and developed into a quality defender. For me he was one of the stand out performers in the WC and was absolute rock for Australia. Guus really brought the best out of him and made him into a great leader.

However he did play at CB, going forward I have some reservations.

Good point mate - I don t see him as a marauder either.

But then we are looking a little better in midfield than the last time we had a right fullback risking nosebleeds by going near the half way line .

If you take out Speedy as he was actually bought ages ago we have spent about £17mil net this window. To spend much more without big sales would be a surprise, and yet we could conceivably still get rid of ALT, Pongolle, Diao, and JK. That could bring is say £5-6million.
You've also got to consider the reduction in the wage bill because Cisse, Morientes, Didi and Cheyrou were 4 of our highest paid - that must be a saving of £8 - £9 million a year
