Maybe so - but imho Masher had (and was) still doing his job. Alonso had been a liability with his tackling and we needed pace. If you were leaving Pennant on, the obvious place to put Gerrard was CM. Or take both Alonso and Pennant off and put Bellamy & Crouch on (Bellamy right wing).

I think that Xabi's more progressive passing kept him on. When chasing the game I think it you have to make a sacrifice and Mascher was the right one.

I actually disagree with the poster who said that Xabi and Mascher can't play in the same midfield - in fact I think they offer a brilliant platform to allow a front four complete freedom to play. I think Gerrard has become a player who needs freedom to attack.

I would look to have him play as an attacking central midfielder with two wide players who cut inside to link with the forward - aim for a front three acting like Duff - Drogba and Robben did for Chelsea in previous seasons.

Masher played superbly against Kaka last night. He was only taken off cause he had picked up a booking and Xabi had not. I think he and Xabi can play well together and hope they are both Liverpool players come the start of next season
