This whole Sun debate is interesting, I dont really know all the ins and outs of the situation, but surely it the people who were running the paper back then who should be the focus of the criticism. But they've all moved on.

Murdoch made Mckenzie apologise over the Hillsborough headlines, which he did insincerely, so surely McKenzie is more guilty than the people currently running the Sun and people who own it.

But for me personally my disdain for the Sun is so vehement because of that ridiculous "apology" they printed over Hillsborough in the wake of the furore over the interviews Rooney gave them a few years back. That for me is as much reason to boycott the rag asthose Hillsborough headlines.

Dhavlos, the people who were affected on the 15/04/89 would disagree there mate. Fortunatly, if you like, my two cousins narrowly escaped death. One of my cousins was saved by a ****ing hero who himself was later found dead.
The two still suffer to this very day and so do thousands and thousands more.
What that excuse of a newspaper did was beyond evil. They will NEVER be forgiven in these parts and rightly so.
That's my new book. 'Shut the **** Up, by Dr. Denis Leary'. Patients come in. 'Doctor I-' Shut the **** up! NEXT!! 'Doctor, I've got this-' SHUT THE **** UP!! NEXT! 'He made me feel so much better. He just told me to shut the **** up. Nobody ever told me that before!'

Well, I certainly see the argument for extending a boycott to other Murdoch enterprises but, for me, it's about what the families themselves have asked for. They want Liverpool fans not to buy that newspaper, so that's where it begins and ends, as far as I am concerned. If I buy a newspaper, which I do only infrequently, then it's almost always The Times. They didn't print those lies and, as Kilteragh said, they're a million miles apart editorially.

The Sun spent the 1980s libelling more than just the Hillsborough dead and they've had a few court cases to contend with since, too. In no way has the newspaper shown any genuine remorse or made any meaningful retraction of its comments of that time.

I just find it strange that the guy has over 9000+ posts and seems oblivious to the relationship between that rag and Hillsborough. I have no axe to grind with the lad but **** me..

I`d say that education is very important in this case.

When i lived in Poland i didn`t have a slightest clue about all lies that were published after Disaster. Only after moving to Ireland i found out. Eventhough one lad said to me that Liverpool supporters don`t buy this rag i didn`t understand why. When i got broadband at home and started to surf internet on daily bases my eyes opened and i understood how important is this for our identity and that equally to fantastic achievements on the pitch those tragic and sad days in our history make Liverpool Football Club so special.

Fair enough mate, I understand what you're saying. Obviously what was printed was out of line, and given that and that their apology a couple of years ago was so hollow, there's plenty of reason there to never forgive and to boycott the rag forever.

But a lot of other papers printed the same thing at the time didn't they and but becasue they apologised they're still bought in Liverpool aren't they?

And didn't McKenzie say that he did apologise, but he didn't want to and it was basically only because Murdoch made him?

BTW YNWA to your cousins and to those who didn't make it, and their families.

Probably no different to the misinformation people hear about Poles in the UK and generate here in Germany. Whether it's papers, newcasts or people, the propaganda spreads and does the damage intended.

**** it may as well put my head on the chopping block along with Fredo.

Never thought I'd do this but I'm gonna stand up for the little ****er.

Firstly I agree Fredo ****ed up,he shouldn't have said what he did.
But in his defense I don't think he realised the extent of the hatred that scousers and Liverpool fans in general feel for that rag.

I know this because I myself hadn't a ****ing clue and used to buy said rag until a better informed mate of mine told me what had happened.

At the time they ran what they did I was only a kid and didn't buy papers or have any interest in the news,I was aware as all Liverpool fans are of what happened that terrible day,I'd watched it on TV in fact, the match had been televised here in Ireland,I don't know if it was in England.

Anyway my point being up until maybe 8 years ago or so I did buy the rag and in fact on the plane to Athens I pointed out to my brother that alot of Irish lads on the plane were reading the ****ing thing.

I couldn't believe it,I'd been unware myself for years but couldn't believe others still were.

Fredo ****ed up and I don't think he meant any real offence,I hope he comes back.

He's not oblivious, it's obvious he's aware of it but as a non-scouser he doesn't share the strength of feeling towards the issue as a scouser does. Can you really blame him for that?

I mean I might have a resentment towards Turks for everything my family went through in the 70's in Cyprus, (uncle missing, whereabouts still unknown, female relatives raped etc) but do you feel empathy towards the way I feel, or do you consider me an irrational racist who should just let go?

Yup, they weren't the only ones. However, they went a lot further with their unfounded allegations. Other newspapers didn't print the worst of what they said. Also, other newspapers quickly issued unreserved apologies. They have yet to do that, 18 years on.

Yes, he said that quite recently, on the BBC's Question Time programme, if I remember rightly. Actually, it may not have been on there. He was certainly reported to have said that at a private lunch some time before the programme.

Absolutely. We need to cut Fredo some slack. Some of the reaction he's had on here has been the real disgrace IMO.

My dentist is an Asian Liverpool fan, he studied at Liverpool University for 5 years or however long dentists go to university for. I was lying back in the chair in his surgery looking up and there were the back pages of The Sun, from the day after Istanbul plastered all over the ceiling. And this is a guy who lived in Liverpool for 5 years FFS.
