My expectations were for him to at least tie down a first team place but he was gash.
Ha! I was over the moon when he scored his first goal on his debut v. Maccabi in the last minute of the game (think he was on the pitch for a minute or so prior that). I said to myself: "That's going to be the best winger in the Premiership". I even thought about buying a kit with his name on the back for a while ... Oh well ...

He did score more goals than Alonso though (if I'm not mistaken? Anyone?)

Gonzalez didn't work out but we couldn't or shouldn't have expected to much in his first season IMO anyway.
I picked him because we have seen Stevie and Xabi perform to their best and it still wasn’t good enough with they players that surrounded them. With all the hype that surrounded Gonzales, I hoped he could have taken us that extra step. If Both S & X had of performed last year, I still think we would have fallen short. [League performances I’m concentrating on, not CL].
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

TBH mate I think it's a little harsh on the lad as he did have a season interrupted by injury.
When he went off against PSV I thought he looked good that night and it was a real disappointment from that point of view.
I don't think he ever regained his confidence and has been moved on.

I would disagree mate while Speedy wasn't up to much last year the hype that surrounded him wasn't his fault and the fact that he had such a long wait to join blah blah blah didn't help the lad.
Stevie and Xabi control our play and they are the ones who should make things happen, to often last year they didn't. They were both to inconsistent in the league and could've turned games for us with better performances.
What was Stevie's return in goals last year?

Disappointment is where expectation exceeds delivery. When players are built up by the Manager (e.g. Rafa with Gonzalez, Houllier with everybody) and they don't match our inflated expectations then naturally we're disappointed.

Likewise players who have done it before, like Alonso and Gerrard, who drop below their previous high levels are equally disappointing.

A bit like "Can't Cook, Won't Cook" really...
There is a light that never goes out. RIP Alan "Mally" Johnston and the 96. YNWA.

You're right, circumstances didn't help. But he got plenty of chances. First season in a new country you don't expect optimal levels of performance or great consistency, but the disappointment is that after all the rave reviews before he arrived he failed to show even glimpses of anything approaching the kind of wide play we need. Hard as he tried, he was just totally out of his depth here.

I think he'll be much better off in Spain, and I wish him all the best. The hype wasn't his fault of course, but it still makes his performances that bit more disappointing.

Fair enough mate but your expectations(you tube I ask ya) and the hype don't mean that he should've performed to that level. As I've said we know what Stevie and Xabi should do week in week out

Xabi for me he never really improved whereas Stevie had a poor start but finished off pretty strongly.

                      Yep, they all disappointed.

The biggie for me was Gerrard, with my favourite player, Xabi, close behind in 2nd place. They're 1 and 2 in my list simply because of the high standards they've set themselves over the years.

If those two get back to their best for the coming season, we'll have a great campaign.

What was Stevie's return in goals last year?

The thing is, we’ve needed a left winger for so long, that anyone bought for that position was gonna greatly disappoint if they didn’t perform. That fact that Gonzo was hyped up so much raised expectations even more, hence heightening the disappointment. Gonzales unfortunately had to endure double the disappointment from fans because not only did he disappoint in performances, the team as a whole disappointed on the left wing AGAIN. Although Stevie and Xabi disappointed in some performances, I was never worried for the team in the centre of the park.

Different players for different reasons, as has already been said.

The fact is, we were never in with a shout for theleague because you need your good players to play well, and that didn't happen, with the exception of Mascherano, Agger and Crouch. Defensive midfield players and centre halves don't win you games though unfortunately.

Reina started off shoddily (made up for it though), Carra had a crap patch, Gerrard and Alonso were sub-par, Sissoko nowhere near the ability of the year before, Kuyt/Bellamy/Pennant either took too long to settle or didn't bother. We also had longterm injuried to Kewell and Garcia, players that have the potential to win us games.

Honestly everyone but Kuyt started the season so poorly they all disappointed me. By the end Reina, Carra, Finnan, Crouch and Pennant redeemed themselves to some extent while Kuyt started to fail to liev up to his early form.
