If Benitez had any doubts about Neill's pedigree, he need only assess the results of a scientific survey that found the Australian to be one of the most effective defenders at Germany 2006.
A study by Dr Istvan Gorgenyi, who analysed the Australia team's use of space, found that Neill was the everywhere man.
"Lucas Neill last year (at the Confederations Cup) was a left-sided defender playing almost for himself, and he was put in the middle where he became one of the best defenders of the World Cup," Gorgenyi, an expert in group dynamics and the coach of the gold medal-winning women's water polo team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, said.
"He had a big effect on the whole team as a role model and also as a player who was always around to help."
