This is a calculated gamble by Rafa. I bet in an ideal world he wants Carson here as strong competition for Pepe and a more than able deputy if Pepe gets a serious injury. He wouldnt let Dudek go last year, despite his moans of slavery etc, as he wanted a strong second keeper as back up (despite his horror shows when he did step in, he was an experienced keeper who at one time was quality).

Having to let Carson go presents him with a problem though. Although he can get a decent loan fee and hopefully watch his stock rise and possibly sell for even more this time next year, the second keeper position is a problem. Does anyone think Itandje has been watched for years like most of his targets? To me, this seems like it's an end of the transfer season gamble and that he may not have been as thoroughly scouted as other targets may have been (only my speculation, not fact).

The worry is - what if Reina gets seriously injured and is out for months like Cech was last year. Will the 2nd choice be good enough to cover for say, 4 months? Thats nearly half a season. How would that affect our defence? In past seasons you could get away with a Peggy Arphexad as your no 2, but can you now should a bad injury hit your no 1? That's why I think Rafa has gambled - gambled that Reina keeps fit and that he wont get a long term injury.

This is assuming that the keeper isn't top drawer as he was no longer the Lens no 1. Obviously not the soundest of things to base an opinion on, but then it is merely me speculating. Obviously I'll judge him when I have seen him play several games for us (if he ever does).

You can't transfer registrations of players outside the transfer windows and as Villa are supposed to be paying us £2.5m for the loan I doubt we will have any sort of recall clause in the contract to allow him to return in January.

I think the laws allow it, the question is what the contact between LFC and Villa is like, they must have put in a clause to say we can recall him, then again if Parry did the negotiating

Actually my last post was a slight lie as keepers have transfered under a special provision outside the transfer windows before in some cases but I suspect that this would not be possible with loans, but I couldn't be sure.
