    LIVERPOOL CONFIRM CARRA BREAK

    Jimmy Rice 26 August 2007

Liverpool have confirmed Jamie Carragher sustained a broken rib during Saturday's 2-0 victory over Sunderland.

Tests on Sunday morning also revealed the defender has developed a pneumothorax.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Sami Hyypia broke his nose at the Stadium of Light. However, he trained at Melwood on Sunday and is expected to be fit to face Toulouse on Tuesday.

Club spokesman Ian Cotton said: "Sami has a broken nose but will be available for the second leg of our Champions League qualifier.

"Jamie underwent a series of investigations on Sunday morning which confirmed he has a broken rib and has also developed a pneumothorax. He will continue to be monitored on Sunday but at this stage no further treatment will be required."

No wonder he wanted off! That can be problematic right?

Carra would onnly ever demand to go off like that if he is in serious pain, as we seen, he still played on while there was play, which speaks volumes for the lad, he even got a tackle or two in.
          Got this from Wiki:
Sudden shortness of breath, cyanosis (turning blue) and pain felt in the chest and/or back are the main symptoms. In penetrating chest wounds, the sound of air flowing through the puncture hole may indicate pneumothorax, hence the term "sucking" chest wound. The flopping sound of the punctured lung is also occasionally heard.

If untreated, hypoxia may lead to loss of consciousness and coma. In addition, shifting of the mediastinum away from the site of the injury can obstruct the superior and inferior vena cava resulting in reduced cardiac preload and decreased cardiac output. Untreated, a severe pneumothorax can lead to death within several minutes.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

          * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

Carragher hard - he`ll be only out for a few weeks - he`ll play with painkilling injections

Still need a new CB though - especially as Palleta has gone
            We need better attacking players!

            Torres aint enough

not so sure mate, something like that is going to affect his breathing so it might not be as simple as playing through the pain

So no ideas as to how long Carra will be out for? Certainly does sound like a nasty one.

Rafa will definitely need to bring in some reinforcements - one more defensive injury and we could be in big trouble.

Micah Richards would obviously be a dream signing, but I think we can all safely assume it won't be happening.

A little bit of wider reading
                  --------------------------------------------------------
                  Releasing the problem

An x-ray of the lungs helps to confirm that a pneumothorax is present. Small ones will clear without treatment over a few days as the body heals the leak and the air is absorbed.
                  ----------------------------------------------------------

Doesn't look like that side of things will be a problem, seems it'll just take time for his rib to heal

Agreed, the puncture must be a small one, however a broken rib ****ing kills and if we rush him back and he takes a knock...which is likely as id certainly target a weakened c.b.....he will bloody well know about it!
I say buy cover.....which was probable anyway i reckon.

I had 2 broken ribs 3 years ago and carried on playing for the season cos me doctor said there is nothing we can do about it. He goes "just keep taking Advil and the ribs will heal on its own".
Carra might be back way before 4 weeks.

Seriously though, the collapsed lung should heal itself fairly quickly but the broken rib injury will take a while. I've had cracked and bruised ribs before and believe me it only hurts when you breath!! It's ****in' seriously painful!!

What makes matters worse is that as a bloke you just know your mates are gonna try and make you laugh just so you'll be in pain - *******s!!

Get well soon Carra - A proper ****in' legend!!

To be fair, he did have 3 injuries to report for 2 players. One line per injury.

I'd still rather he was that way instead of fluffing it up with crap.
