I know that. But there are matchwinners and there are other players.

        I love it.

It's the goalscorer's action that has been decisive in winning the match, you cant win the game without the goal in the first place. But you can without the goal line clearance, because your match winner can produce at the other end.

Remember when we had Owen at the top of his form? The expression "When you've got Michael Owen, you've always got a chance"....

Carra can make the clearances but he wont win the match without the matchwinner doing his thing. To win you HAVE to score, but you wont necessarily HAVE to make a goal line clearance.

With a keeper as good as Pepe, and a Cb replacement as good as Sami, we won't start to conceded bucket loads of goals. without Stevie we lack most of a cutting edge. I'm not too worried about cara being out tbh.

This is a real false dichotomy. We need to be strong at the back to allow Gerrard and the other players the freedom to attack. Carragher provides excellent defensive organisation and the only current acceptable alternative is Hyypia and Agger. Arbeloa can fill in but we need someone to organise at the back or two players who understand our system well at centreback.

The alternative I guess is to play a more defensive central midfield (say Momo and Mascher).

If we don't have faith in Hobbs to be a first team defender (he would at least presumably know how zonal defense works) then we probably need to bring in an experienced european central defender.

Who is a bigger loss Carra or Gerrard is irrelevant at the moment we have to put a side out which contains neither and still win matches. You can rely on individual match winners or you can have a pattern that eeks out victories against weaker teams - I suspect we will rely on the latter for now but Torres and some of the other new signing offer the potential that soon Gerrard will not be the only player we can rely on for a moment of magic.

Hopefully the added responsibility on players like Torres and Alonso will make them step up their game.

We've already got three perfectly good center backs, Sami Hyppia, Daniel Agger and Arbeloa.

And one of them(Arbeloa) has never played a full game for us as a central defender and isn't any good in the air.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.
