Should Liverpool have an affinity to Rangers or Celtic?

i'm not sufficiently well informed to know if thats the case or not.

My point is that the best person for any particular job should get that job. i recently went for a job interview for the post of business manager/bursar in a large catholic school in liverpool. i was told off the record by a governor at the school that I didn't get the position as i'm not catholic. Its particulary ironic as my Dads a catholic and my mums protestant. i was brought up as a proddy but could just as easily have been brought up a catholic. If i had, i would have got the job but i wasn't so i didn't. now surely that can't be right.

Well how reliable is this person who told you? He may have said that but you don't know whether or not you didn't get it because there was someone more qualified than you? Or perhaps you were on a par with someone else but they were a practicing Catholic? I dunno. Catholic education has always been the same. They want people who fully understand and suppport their aims and if you aren't Catholic then you don't. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but the success of Catholic schools on the whole would be the main reason they don't want change because so far whatever they are doing is working.

I've always associated Liverpool with Celtic to be honest but I remember my dad saying Liverpool was for Protestants and Everton was for Catholics. Most of my family are Evertonians but I don't think it has anything to do with the fact we are all Catholics. In fact I know so because my dad was a Protestant (before he married my mum and became a Catholic) but he was also a staunch Evertonian.

True. I hate all this sectarian crap. Religion is supposed to be about being good, so it's a load of hypocritical crap. I hate the Z Cars Orange drum song just because of the evil bogotry it embodies. My wife is Catholic. Who cares, that's the least of our problems.

I was surprised when I found out that LFC was a protestant club, because I'd always thought as us of being very Irish linked and because of our links with Celtic. Then I saw a **** at work who was a Scum fan who had a Celtic/Manure wallpaper on his PC. Do they copy everything we do?

The link with Celtic seems to date back to Kenny?

Two girls I worked with were Rangers fans and their hatred of Celtic reminded me of the Bitters hatred of us.. I said that Celtic had done well for Scotland in Europe and got them an extra place in the cups and they just spat venom. Celtic waving Spanish holiday souvenirs e.g. donkeys and sombreros at them during the derby when they'd got to the final, was just like our sense of humour too. They just seem more like us and the repressed, crude hate-filled 'Gers more like Everton.

It isn't. Everton aren't a catholic club. Show me in either club's official history where it says anything different. Both clubs have substantial Irish-scouse fanbase (including my familly). The only people who spread this kind of thing do so because they have sectarian agendas.

I don't want this thread to be about why I didn't get the job in question. Maybe I wasn't the best candidate, maybe my religion did effect my chance.

Anyway whats done is done and its time to get back to the subject in question, and if I could remember what that is, i would try to make a valid and succinct point.

Like I said in my earlier reply, many of the club's early directors were connected to the Orange Order including founder John Houlding and John McKenna. Liverpool F.C. also had strong connections to the Working Men's Conservative Association (WMCA), the political expression of the Liverpool Protestant Association.
