Crouch & Riise off in Jan? Players in?

    It's from The Daily Mail - not sure how reliable that is;

Rafa Benitez is heading for a major fall-out with Peter Crouch as he tries to force the England striker out of Anfield in the January transfer window.

The Liverpool manager has decided to cash in on Crouch as soon as possible after confirming that he has a £20 million budget to spend on new players in the new year.

But the player, who has 18 months left on his contract, is determined to stay put until the summer unless he gets the right move for his future.

Benitez's patience with his centre-forward has finally snapped after Crouch's lacklustre performance in the 1-0 midweek defeat by Marseille and he is unlikely to play against Tottenham today.

The manager is irritated by the player's attitude towards his rotation system and his refusal to sign a new deal which would boost his resale value to the club.

Not only that, Crouch is looking for his first goal of the season after netting 24 times for club and country last season. Juventus,Real Madrid, Manchester City and Portsmouth are all interested in the 6ft 7in striker but he is prepared to wait until the summer to weigh up his options, particularly as he would be ineligible to play in the Champions League for another team this season.

Benitez, who has seen his side score just once in five Premier and Champions League games since hammering Derby 6-0, is ready to bring in new blood and John Arne Riise is also on the for-sale list.

The Anfield manager said: "We've been working on buying new players since the beginning of September. We do not have problems in the financial area because we have sold a lot of players. We have around 35m euros (£20.7m)."

Liverpool would get back the £7m they paid for Crouch if they sold him in January but the fee would drop as his contract started to run down.

Benitez admitted he was on the warpath following the Marseille debacle.

"We were really bad as a team so the staff and I and the players had to be together. I was really disappointed. And I was angry. But you cannot change anything by being angry. You need to analyse."

****in hell. 20 million if we sold Crouch during the summer, 7 million in January

I really really don't want us to sell Riise

I want Riise to stay too

Crouch's contract running very low, and the fact he's now CL - tied means that his value is decreasing rapidly. Looks like he's a gonna, and to be fair, he probably needs to move on.

I cant see Crouch going to a champions league club. Maybe Spurs or Juve at best. I wont be too upset if he leaves because its not fair on him at the moment and it just seems to be getting worse.

        FAO Rafa: Please keep Riise

I'd only keep Riise for the squad only. I don't think that he is good enough to be starting week in week out.

I'd rather see Aurelio go than Riise.
Twin boys - now arriving late August 2008.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!

Its a nice bit of money if its true. If he sells Crouch then its near 30 million to spend, do I hear Mancini being mentioned?

I really really really don't want either of them to go. 2 great squad players and I don't think we've seen anything of what Aurelio can do. I'd keep him for his crossing and freekicks alone

                  Why would we keep Riise?

We have several better options in his positions. Aurelio and Arbeloa are better left backs. Kewell, Babel and Leto are better left midfielders.

Why keep a player we don't need? We already have a big enough squad to cope without him.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Well spotted mate, I thought the same.

It might actually mean we have more than that, as in he's announcing a finite 20m in the hope it will stop clubs pushing up the price of his targets.

He's no use to us in sick bay.

£20m plus the money we get for Riise and Crouch, I would say that Rafa would then have around £30m-£35m to spend.

I don't believe the £20m story by the way but I'm bored so just say that it's true.

I would sign Barry and Aguero for the £30m-£35m.

I agree, it's very rare for a manager to say how much they have to spend, and most unlike Rafa

Interesting that he's been speaking / looking at players since Sept. Am all excited now!!

Aurelio & Kewell - I don't think I need to point out their injury problems

Leto - It's early days but so far he's not looked ready for first team football

Babel - Not a left midfielder, and if Crouch goes he'll be used up top

Arbeloa - Ok he's probably better at LB than Riise, but Arbeloa should be fighting it out with Finnan for the RB position.
