Where exactly did I question his 'contribution to the team over the years'?

He's not a very good captain. When he plays well he leads by example, but he doesn't cajole, he doesn't lift players around him. He tends to just glare at team-mates or sulk.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

When the commentator on 5live mentioned he pulled out of a tackle with Zakora i felt physically sick, ****in disgrace really.
Unacceptable, can't expect him to perform game in, game out, a dip in form is perfectly fine but pulling out of tackles, generally not looking like he cares etc is totally wrong.

Today was an example of what's lacking in him, when it comes to leadership. Heads were dropping. Sadly, his was the first one to do so. He gave it up with over 20 mins to go.

I have to laugh every time I see a thread calling for SG to go out on the wing. You can guarantee it'll be followed by a 'why isnt rafa playing gerrard in the middle?' thread a couple of weeks later.

Yes he's been crap since the last internationals but that goes for the whole team. When a game bypasses the whole midfield you have to point fingers at 3 other players too. As soon as we get Agger and Xabi back I think we will be a different team.

The problems we're having go much further than Gerrard. Carra is having to defend for 2 players at the moment. Hyypia was dreadful, he didnt win a header all game and got caught out of position a few times. That cannot inspire confidence in the rest of the side. When you see Voronin chasing back to make 2 tackles in his own area then you have to wonder what the hell is going on back there.

That's not really the point we're making...

The other three midfielders arent wearing an armband.

              Carragher wasn't great either mate
I love him as much as the next man but it would be fair to say he didn't have his greatest game today.

Sorry Shaggy but thats BS. Stevie dragged us up from the pits in Istanbul and you could see his message to both the fans AND his fellow players that we were back in it.

I've seen him give a bashing to players when they've ****ed up or give a pat on the back when they've done well. I can't think of any other way he can lift the team

That makes it worse in a way.

He obviously CAN do it, but on some occasions, especially recently (and today), he seemingly didnt have the passion to do so.

Someone mentioned to me that he was limping slightly or walking awkwardly going off the pitch towards the end, can anyone confirm this he might be pulling out of tackles because of his dodgy toe

                      Love it.

And when SG scores the winner in a Final or does something spectacular to win an important game in May he`ll be a Hero again.

We`re 9 games into the season and SG should be dropped, moved or even sold.FFS!!!!!!

Fowler,Owen,Rush,Dalglish and Barnes all suffered 9 game dips in form in their illustrious careers and came back to win trophies.

                      Alot of KneeJERKS

around here when we don`t win against teams like Spurs who are stuffed full of International players and due to perform better than their below par start to the season.

                      Wise up lads.

That's one example - the same example cited all the time.

There aren't many other moments. I'm not talking about great, match-winning or saving efforts. There's been stacks of those...we know that. I'm not talking about him as a player, I'm talking purely in terms of the captaincy.

He can lift the team by not going into a sulk and letting his head drop, as DJS says, before anybody else has dropped theirs - for a start.

Different opinions but I get your point.

What do you think of the idea of dropping him though?

Who's saying he should be sold?

As for dropped, if a player is out of form, why should he have a 'god given right' (i think it was you called it, in the Crouch thread) to start, regardless?

Shame Alonso's out, because it means Gerrard HAS to start at the moment, whether he's performing or not.

He's a player, he's not god. If he plays poorly, he shouldnt keep his place. Especially not when the rotation system leaves GOOD performers sitting on the bench in the next game.

There are different styles of leadership and management mate and I would agree that his style is by leading by example - in that he is an excellent captain.

We have won everything bar the league with him as captain so he must be someway good at it. Who knows what he does off the pitch, how he helps other team mates in training or personal lives or whatever? These can also be elements of a captain's job

It's not always about roaring your head off like Roy Keane or John Terry. Anyway I think a team needs several leaders on the pitch and shouldn't be reliant on just one - that's where we are lacking, other than with Carra.
You can agree with me, or you can be wrong.
