cause "he's our best player" needs some explanation don't you think?
either you explain something or you just repeat it dogma like but don't expect to be taken seriously if you can't back your opinion up. simple as that.

I am aware that you used the above phrase in this thread, but my comment wasn't directed at you specifically.

                you know you couldnt

never said he was the most consistent, or our 'Mvp' my point was i believe that on the top of his game he is almost superhuman!

But stevie has rescued us and dragged the team into more winning positions and generally got us out of more **** than any other player in the team!!

he's not been at his best since before the world cup. question was, is he still our most important player, you say yes, i'd say no. in football there's no time for sentiments though, you can't live on the past for too long.

do people still think he is our most important (maybe even best?) player? Have others superceeded him? or do we have a core group?

I think Stevie is now part of a group of players who are of vital importance to us (Reina, Carra, Agger, Xabi, Mascher and now Torres)
I don't think Stevie is the best anymore, at least not based on his form last season and this.

The two things that really define our game are possession football and a high defensive line.

Xabi is by far the most important player to enable posession football, no-one retains and regains the ball as well as, or as often as he does.

The only reason we can play a high line is that Reina is unique, he's a goal sweeper.

Given Rafa's approach those two are definitely more important now.

I love stevie and there is no doubt in my mind he will soon be back to his marauding best form. That said if i had to get shot of one of Stevie or Torres im afraid stevie would be on his way.
My reasoning is simple...we have ready made replacements for stevie, not like for like but certainly more than adequate, and without Torres we look ****. For me Torres is already our most important player.

I cant believe how fickle some people are, I remember at half time in Istanbul people were slatting Gerrard for going missing, come full time he is a legend, he is a human being out of form, he will be back.

no one should rest on their laurels...on current form Torres is a superior player. Ask again in 5 years and see what we think of their respective careers....both will be Liverpool Legends I would be willing to wager. We are fortunate to have them both.

I think he's our most important player, the only other team i can really liken us to is AC Milan with Kaka, they are both the figureheads of the team, they have important players around them, but take those players out or if they aren't on form the team drops a level

My other pick would be Reina, he really is for me a world class goal keeper, and that's not a term i'd use too often, to lose him for a prolonged length of time would be disasterous. Torres might join that list, but he's got a little way to go yet

if you read my original post you'll see that I havent slated him, just merely posed the question if he is still our most important player or have others now earned the right to be considered just as important to the club as SG.
