My reasoning is simple...we have ready made replacements for stevie, not like for like but certainly more than adequate, and without Torres we look ****. For me Torres is already our most important player.
We won the CL without Torres....

The point is, we had a far far inferior squad back then and managed to lift the biggest prize of all. Never has 1 man done so much for a team since Maradona "won" the world cup. Gerrard is one of only 2 or 3 players in the world today that can have that kind of influence on a game. Do you think we'd still have won it if we had Torres but not Gerrard? Not a hope!

well it wasnt as if he put in man of match performances in every game, in fact i would venture that he was average in most of the matches, although he manned up in the second half of the final. We won the Cl with great tactics and team spirit.

Difference with Maradona is that he did put in amazing superhuman performances just about every game in 86, scored wonder goals and constantly caused problems for opponents.

I think it is probably fair to say that part of the team spirit that won the CL was genearted by the feeling that we were always capable of getting a goal from somewhere in Europe though, and a large part of the credit to that has to go to Gerrard (another hero being Garcia - which reminds me, we need another consistent midfield goalscorer, in recent year we have got rid of Garcia and Cisse who wasn't bad at scoring from midfield for all his manyfold problems as a player and not really replaced either).

Then again, we might not have won it without Garcia either.

Or Djimi - for that goal line clearance alone he is a legend.

However I think there is a point that such an unlikely victory requires a talismanic figure. In effect Gerrard doing the same thing that Johnny Wilkinson has done for the England team at the RWC.

I dunno about Gerrard in the campaign, I dont really recall him being outstanding in many matches, during the group stages, apart from the THAT goal, nowt, was suspended for the first Leverkusan game, dont recall him doing much in the return leg, against Juve nothing, against the Chavs ok he seemed to be at the breach, but not anymore than most of the other boys.

I would even go and say others (igor, Pongo, Mellor, ALT) stepped up when Gerrard went missing, esp Garcia, without him we would not have gotten anywhere.

Luis, would rather him in the team than Pennant or Yossi.

well true but: the goals these two lads scored were just as vital as stevie's. all that's remembered is gerrard's goal though...
i wouldn't say it's harsh on gerrard, it's harsh on everyone in the team who contributed to that success when all that people do actually remember is gerrard winning it almost single-handedly. that's what i call harsh.
