Is Stevie still our most important player?

following on from the market values thread, people still seem to value Stevie at circa 25mill+. But for a while now he hasn't been playing as such a high value marquee player.

do people still think he is our most important (maybe even best?) player? Have others superceeded him? or do we have a core group?

I think Stevie is now part of a group of players who are of vital importance to us (Reina, Carra, Agger, Xabi, Mascher and now Torres)

Yes he is our MVP. Just a bit out of form - he will be back.

              Oh, difficult question.
I reckon it is not about one, but about our spine which need to be intact for us to work well.
Reina, Carra, Agger, Alonso, Masch, SG, Torres.

                No.

Our system is based on Reina acting like a sweeper and on Agger carrying the ball out of defense, not on Stevie being in top form or not.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

i think his lack of form last season and this season shows that he isn't. rafa doesn't like one player carrying the team. i think there are 5 players in the team that are equally important as gerrard...

I think that Stevie sets the mood for the team. I'm not convinced he is the best player within the system that Rafa uses though.

I think that Gerrard is the one player who would be the 'missing' piece for a large number of other teams because he is capable of so much in so many different areas. So from the point of view of if we were to ever sell him he would with very little doubt be our most valuable asset.

I'm close to being with AFII though in that I believe under Rafa the most important players have become Reina, Carra, Agger and Alonso in dictating how we set the team up and control a game. However as that shows it is a pretty tactical/defensive bent to that and you have to add some creativity and flair to it to win things and I think that is where players like Gerrard and Torres are vital to us. I happen to think we could get a player who in style better suited our team than Gerrard but whether we would get the same attitude and commitment that helped win the CL and FA cup is a completely different question.

that is true, he does have that extra amount of pride in wearing the shirt. I dont know if any of the others would be able to grasp a game/final as Stevie has done. I do get the feeling Torres was the equivalent of Stevie at Atletico and maybe able to draw upon the fans for that extra bit of ommph?

Whilst im not of the belief that any team should rely on one person to carry them through, i do believe Stevie's lack of form does have something to do with how we are playing at the moment, even if its purely psychological.

However, if we didnt have the core of players that people have already mentioned above, i think our situation would be much, much worse.

although stevie is our best player, we need someone who can carry that mantle upfront and produce the goods week in week out. Torres and owen
