I don't think it matters who is captain, SG, Carra or Alonso. Carra is very vocal and his influence is just as great now as it would be if he was captain. SG leads more by example rather than shouting or balling. I'm happy with SG as skipper but equally if Carra was skipper than I'd have no problem with that either.AKA Heighway No9

How The Hell Can Anyone Call Gerard A Bad Captain Or Question Him As A Player Or Say He Has A Negative Effect On The Team Etc... The Man Has Almost Single Handed Dragged Us Back From Defeat So Many Times, He Has Won Us The Champion League And Fa Cup Almost By Himself, He Is The Greatest Player In The World Today At What He Does, Without Him We Would Fall Down The League To Middle Table Mediocracy. It Worked For Arsenal To Sell Henry But Gerard Is Much More Integral To Our Play Then Henry Ever Was. Get Behind Stevie And Show The Support To The Greatest Player This Club Has Seen Since King Kenny Wore The Shirt!!People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

Point 1 - Why do you write with capital letters in every word?Originally posted by the rev leeroy brown View PostHow The Hell Can Anyone Call Gerard A Bad Captain Or Question Him As A Player Or Say He Has A Negative Effect On The Team Etc... Point 2 - He is not The Greatest Player In The World Today. He is off form, and has been for over a year now.
Point 3 - As a captain, he does not currently lead by example. He sulks, talks to the press about where he thinks he should be playing.
Point 4 - He is a liability at the moment. We are a better side with Mascher and Xabi in the middle. Put SG on the right, where he is better than Pennant, and out of the way with regards to tracking back.Oh I don't know.

I'm trying to think of anything he's said - since his second flirtation with the Chavs - that's given the media any clear ammunition to create a rift between Gerrard and the manager/club.Originally posted by James View PostHe needs to remember that everything he does is going to be twisted and manipulated by the press and in that sense he is either still naive or using the press to discredit Rafa a bit.
Fact is he's said nothing and they've made it all up. He played a whole season on the right just about, they tried to make a big deal out of it, Gerrard didn't complain and Rafa didn't budge and recently the Derby substitution. Gerrard was surprised, but we all were and Gerrard's done or said nothing to suggest he's unhappy about it.
The debate about him being a great captain or even a good one is valid though. At times he's an inspirational figure and a genuine match winner. I remember his second half performance in Istanbul, then I remember a host of other matches where he failed to exert his influence. Great player? No doubt. Great captain, inspirational leader? Not quite.
Just wonder if giving Carra the captaincy might just relieve Gerrard of the massive pressure, he and others put on him.I hate Polanski

No criticism of Rafa at all, im a fan of him.Originally posted by badpiggy View Posti think you've hit a number of nails on the head there brother.
but there's a lot of inherent criticism of rafa in there - is that intentional?
I just think Xabi's game has change alot in the last year and not for the better. He should be more involved higher up the pitch not sitting in front of the back 4 he's wasted at doing that. Maybe when he's 33 he can do that but not at 24/25

Point 1 - i wrote the whole piece in capitals and thats how it appeared
Point 2 - His form has dipped just recently. For the last year or so he has been the best central midfielder in the world. Who else tracks back to his own box and seconds later appears in the opponents box or on a wing to deliver a cross - no-one
Point 3 - As a captain he does lead by example. He plays with his heart on his sleeve. He in an inspiartion to all around him. As for the press, the only time Stevie talks about his position is when the media ask him about it. He would happily play anywhere for liverpool fc but the media make a deal ou of it, not stevie himself.
Point 4 - Xabi and Mascherano would not work as there is no attacking runs made by either of them. Every team needs a midfielder attacking from the middle - deco at barca, lampard at chelsea, scholes at man utd, kaka at milan, the list goes on...... forgetting momo because he is ****, the only way to play xabi and javier in same team is to go 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 with a gerard plaing in the middle. To put him on the right is a waste. Get benayoun on the right cause that boy has skill!People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

FLMAO at some people in this thread. Gerrard has carried this team almost single handed at times over the past 8 seasons. He won us the Euro Cup final, saved the fa cup against west ham and dragged us through many many others. If he has got too big for his boots he's earnt the right to feel that way. **** me a few seasons back we'd have been mid table without him. He's been pratted about being played out of position by a manager who has still failed to get the best from him after 3 years. A week ago he's accused of playing with passion. That for me is the ultimate piss take.
Saying all that, I do wish he'd smile more and SHOOT on sight.Always borrow money from a pessimist. He won’t expect it back. Oscar Wilde

Your Orginal Post Appeared Like This Rather Than All Capitals. Weird.
I don't personally think SG has been anywhere near his best in the last year. I'm struggling to remember a game that he looked world class in for the last 12 months.
I think Xabi and Mascher could and should play together - especially with the current state of the defence. Where to play SG is a valid one though. Ahead of the midfield two, or on the right, I'm not so sure.Oh I don't know.

I agree with what you say apart from the bit in bold. Getting too big headed is wrong no matter who you are.Originally posted by BobTheCharmer View PostFLMAO at some people in this thread. Pretty much spot on - he's certainly earnt a lot more bloody respect than he gets.Originally posted by BobTheCharmer View PostFLMAO at some people in this thread. The man is a gibbering old fool - I can't believe how easily impressed some people are just because an article is "well written". I've never seen Gerrard say he thinks he is the most important thing, in fact he regularly says (when pushed into talking about positions) that he has a preference but will play wherever he is asked. It's typical that media articles convince you all that Gerrard is a trouble maker even though you all claim to hate the media. And then you read another media article and start praising it - make your minds up!Originally posted by kurtangle01 View PostGreat article. I like Bobby Robson, he talks alot of sense.
