you could be a chainy with a bit of a drinking habit back in the days and still be a top striker. it's has become far more physically demanding for everyone on the pitch (bar the goalie maybe).

you remember jimmy greaves too then?

seriously, the likes of bryan robson and paul mcgrath in the 80's were borderline alcoholics - no way they could do that now

One thing though, we are of course using todays standards and ideals when we judge both yesterdays and todays footballers. Not fair on the old fellas maybe, but the game has evolved and demands more professionalism these days.

being austrian it reminds me of the great austrian striker toni polster who got fined now and again in the latter stage of his carreer for defying the smoking ban on training grounds.

Strikers wasn't slagged off on the net after a bad game 20 years ago.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

strikers wasn't really reading internet forums these days either though.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

                        * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

but now they get extra super slagged off after five bad minutes.

Everyone knows that Gerrard must be sold if he don't deliver against Fulham.

                                Liverpool - Rush v Torres ... Rush
                                Everton - Sharpe v Johnson .... Sharpe

The point I am trying to make is: Has the modern day striker changed or it is just historical achievements made by the older strikers that perceive a change in the modern day striker?
