Liverpool are eyeing a major double signing as Rafa Benitez looks to make Javier Mascherano and Ezequiel Garay permanent members of his squad.
Benitez is reported to have made a major breakthrough in his negotiations with MSI, the company that own Mascherano’s playing rights.
MSI, who also control Carlos Tevez's involvement with Manchester United, initially wanted a reported £17 million fee for the Argentinean ball-winner, who has enjoyed an impressive 11 months on Merseyside.
However, it is believed Liverpool have agreed for that £17 million fee to include the player’s wages over a five-year spell – beating off interest from Barcelona.
The news would please goalkeeper Jose Reina, who stated: “It is quite important because Mascherano has been one of our best players so far.
“It was a loan, a clever loan, and we have to take the next step which is to get him for a few years.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool have been boosted in their pursuit of 21-year-old centre back Garay after he revealed he would love to play in England.
Garay was named in La Liga’s team of the season last year, and he currently has a £14.2 million buy-out clause at Racing Santander.
“To play in England is a dream,” he was quoted as saying in The News of the World.
“My head is in Racing but I would like to progress.”
Manchester United are also monitoring the defender.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

can't be true surely, i'd imagine he'd get wages of around 50kish a week which would equate to 13mil over 5 yrs, there's no way we're getting him for 4mil, even at 40k a week it be 10.4mil in wages and only 6.6mil in transfer moneyOriginally posted by AFII View PostFantastic piece of business if true.
Also why does Reina seem to open his grid every international break, i reckon we should gag himThomas Hicks Senior

Say that he gets £50k/week then that's £13m in wages and we would have signed him for £4mOriginally posted by kurtangle01 View PostCompletely agree, mate.

Depends on how much pressure Masch puts on MSI. If he say that he will only sign for us then they is left with no transfer fee and will have to pay his wages if they don't sell him to us.Originally posted by Morphorino View Postcan't be true surely, i'd imagine he'd get wages of around 50kish a week which would equate to 13mil over 5 yrs, there's no way we're getting him for 4mil, even at 40k a week it be 10.4mil in wages and only 6.6mil in transfer money

or they say well tough **** matey we own your rights, as soon as that loan period is over with liverpool you're going where we tell yaOriginally posted by AFII View PostDepends on how much pressure Masch puts on MSI. what i do think might have a bearing on this are these new fifa regulations on 3rd party ownership, which come into effect in 2008, and i'm sure the board will be waiting to see happens, because they won't want to cock anything up, and might even be the reason we could get him for so little moneyThomas Hicks Senior

If I remember correctly for the tevez deal, MSI received an initial lump sum amount and a proportion of the wages also. Maybe it is a similar deal where Kia gets say 15 % of Mascher's salary.Originally posted by Morphorino View Postcan't be true surely, i'd imagine he'd get wages of around 50kish a week which would equate to 13mil over 5 yrs, there's no way we're getting him for 4mil, even at 40k a week it be 10.4mil in wages and only 6.6mil in transfer money

But MSI cannot do anything if Mascher refuses to sign for another club. Not that I am saying that is happening. But if Mascher refuses to sign for another club and MSI does not relent, it will look bad for MSI. An international star held against his will. It will be bad for their image and future stars will think twice before signing for them.Originally posted by Morphorino View Postor they say well tough **** matey we own your rights, as soon as that loan period is over with liverpool you're going where we tell ya
