Having said that, I'm very confident that we can beat Porto in the form we are in right now

I feel like I am responding to about 50 threads so I can talk about 1 real topic, great this.

It's massive, and while the atmosphere will be the same as any big European night, I'd like to think there will be an extra roar of defiance to the new owners, and in support of Rafa.

Neither party has covered themselves in glory, but the best way for Rafa to respond and make things difficult for the new owners, is to win every game between now and the United game, starting with dispatching Porto on Wednesday.

      ------------Reina--------------
      Finnan--Carra--Hyypia--Arbeloa
      ----------Mascherano---------
      -Babel------Gerrard-----Kewell-
      --------Torres--Crouch--------

      COME ON!

The financial importance of getting out of the group is being massively exaggerated in some quarters. Talk of going out costing us tens of millions or ruining any January transfers is nonsense.

The difference between going out at the group stage or not is only a few million quid. Getting out the group only guarantees us 1 more round of money and according to the UEFA site this only 2.2m euro.

Yes it would give us the potential to earn more later in the competition but it guarantees us very little and certainly doesn't change what we can afford to spend in the January window. The extra few million shouldn't make a massive difference either way to a club of our size.

The financial importance of just getting out of the group isn't that great. However the political importance of it for Rafa could be enormous.

i'm glad you've dug that out because i thought that was the case, the 14-20mil these papers are banging on about is a possible amount based on if we get to the final, if i'm right don't we still get an increased share if any english clubs progress because we are all in the same pot of money

Liverpool v Porto- Build Up Thread

Had enough of all this Rafa v Oweners talk, so thought might aswell start this thread early to take our minds off it ofr abit.

Most important game of the season so far, and i'm feeling confidant ahead of it!

i got a feeling that Besiktas will beat Marseille and if we win we will just need a draw in Marseille to progress...

Rafa's thoughts ahead off the game

As for the starting XI, i would go for:

                  --------------Reina--------------
                  Finnan-Carragher-Hyypia-Arbeloa
                  Benayoun-Gerrard-Mascherano-Kewell
                  ----------Crouch-Torres----------

If Yossi isn't fit i would go for Babel instead but i would prefer to use him as an impact sub.

I would play Sammi even if Agger is fit as it's such a ig game and Agger doesn't have the match practise.

If Xabi was fit i would be tempted to play Stevie on the right and Xabi with Mascher in the middle.

Quaresma is their main threat, important to stop him playing.

                  Roll on Wednesday

I can't imagine a scenario in which Crouch doesn't start.

                              Reina
                              Finnan-Carra-Agger-Aurelio
