Just read t'other thread. Not sure about this mini league between the three....surely it's just head to head record and as a result we'd finish third. Could be wrong but seems the simplest way but knowing UEFA you could be right.

Liverpool.no says it`s a minileague between the three teams, and we`ll win that since we won 4-1 against Porto.
      I`m confused now.

No because you create a mini league between teams on equal points (that would be us, Porto and Marseille). We would all be on 5 points in this mini league, so then it's GD between those teams, which means Liverpool would go through thanks to the 3 goal win last night......

Porto would be on 8 points as well.

Obv we have the better head to head record with Porto which was the criteria i was going on between the three teams on equal points.

Think all this speculation is academic anyway as Porto will spank Besiktas at home (surely?!)....so i think a straight win over Marseille is what we need. Nice and simple.

Yeah I can't really see Besiktas winning at Porto, but then stranger things have happened.

Is this the closest CL group in history?

                From Uefa's website

If two or more teams are level on points they are split by (a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question, (b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question (c) higher number of goals scored away from home the group matches played among the teams in question (d) superior goal difference from all matches played, (e) higher number of goals scored, (f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as their association, over the previous five seasons.

It is exactly as it was before the Besiktas match we had to win all 3 to qualify

Now we are left with beating Marselle no other result or combination of results will see us through
Lawrenson:"Well thats 3 good chances they have had in the first 3 minutes of this half"

Motson:"" Yes Mark, you could almost say that they have had 3 chances in as many minutes"

Lawrenson: Errr I thought I just did say that, John"

You are missing the points made in (a) and (b).

All 3 of Liverpool, Porto and Marseille would be on 8 points where Porto to lose and us and Marseille to draw. We win because we all have 5 points in this "mini league" but Liverpool have a higher GD.

Sorry you are wrong, that scenario would have Besiktas top on 9 points and the other 3 teams on 8

According to this article in the Guardian if Besiktas beat Porto and we drew with Marseille we would finish second in the group due to having the superior goal difference in the 'mini league' between the 3 teams on 8 points.

So apologies to DJS who looks like he was right all along.

Read the rules pasted from Uefa's website............. mini leagues do not come into it

and to save everyone scrolling back here they are again:

See the bit in red....the wording is slightly confusing. So according to the rules above all games against Besiktas would be deemed irrelevant leaving all three remaining teams on 5 points. We finish second due to superior goal difference.

What about the head to head between Porto and Marseille? Porto won/drew, and so would be ahead of Marseille. And we are ahead of Porto (hence ahead of Marseille) with Marseille ahead of us...but obviously they can't be if they are behind Porto, cos we are ahead of Porto.

Hence it comes down to a mini-league, with goal difference being the decider.

Course, makes no odds, cos Porto won't lose at home to Besiktas, so we have to win anyway.

thank god for that then.............. Uefa just cant keep things simple can they

I knew we were ahead on the last 2 factors (goal difference & co-efficient)

so does our 8-0 thrashing of Besiktas count for nothing in this scenario?
