He was never gonna start either Toulouse game, he was injured for Everton and I can't remember what the situation was for Besiktas.

He was rested/left out at Pompey and for the home game against Birmingham and came on as sub in both.

He was injured for Besiktas I think and when he was rested against Pompey he had injured himself on international duty but still played the game against Iceland, natural that he was rested I think. Rafa thought we could win Brum without him.

I expected him to be left out at Pompey and defended Rafa on here amid the backlash, although I was pretty miffed he was left out against Brum. I can understand Rafa thinking we could beat Brum without him - we ****ing should be able to - but he still should've played.

I would say the real reason behind the recent bust-up is a combination of the Americans, as is their nature, being cunts and that they, much like the British media as a whole (and I'm specifically referring to Andy Gray here) are blind to Rafa's genius.

According to a friend of a friend of mine (who knows a certain spanish reporter), the real reason behind recent events is that Rafa has felt undermined by the club owners and sees them as trying to have too much influence over not just which players to buy but also over team selection. Their main bone of contention is with the record signing of Torres. They're baffled as to why Rafa keeps dropping the player that they invested so much money in....and they don't want to spend any more until they are sure that the players that Rafa buys will play the majority of games. You won't see Torres dropped too often now before the end of the january transfer window..

In the next 3 seasons A-Rod missed 1 game in 486 (baseball seasons are 162 games). Okay, baseball is not nearly as demanding physically as footie is but there is a lot of travelling, road trips that go on for weeks, and the postion A-Rod played for Hicks' team can involve quite a bit of movement. It's the most important fielding position on the team.

What I'm trying to say is that in Baseball at least its virtually unheard of for top-performing star players to be rested unless it's a meaningless game at the end of the season. I can understand why Hicks might be a bit frustrated when, having been demanded that he spend the big bucks for Torres, the guy is rested and we perform poorly.
