BUT, are there many fullbacks that actually have (or need) a footballing brain?

sure if they don't have one they can agitate at times but for me, the full back slots are the positions where you're least affected by lack of brains
The fullback position is a very important one. They must know when to attack and when to stay back and defend.

Riise's weak spots are positional sense and lack of vision.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Agree with lack of vision. Not sure about bad positioning. His crossing is a bit inconsistant too but his back up play from fullback and his marauding forward are his strong points, not to mention his long throws and most of all his shooting.

Aurelio just doesn't cut the mustard for me. I like his crossing ability but he looks really weak (phsysically) at the back IMO and is also a litle wasteful.

Unfortunately he just isn't quite good enough for the level the club wants to be at. Which is a shame because in fairness to him he has been a loyal servant to the club and nobody ever doubts his workrate. If his touch was good enough so that he was comfortable on the ball, that combined with his other attributes would make him well worth keeping.

I did watch Insua last night and once again showed class.

I will echo AFII views for our team the full backs are important as they are the ones more often then not that are pushed well wide, so if we play a formation like what we did vs Reading then it will Be Riise more often then not trying to provide assists from the left.

After the weekend defeat i was reading a comment Steve Coppell made about how Liverpool make the play Very narrow and that the way the countered this was by playing wide men
                We come not to play.

We need better. Quality like Evra would lift our game to new heights.

Riise is like a box of cheap chocolate; Most of them are crap...

Insua did Ok at the back end of last season, he is one of the best players in the reserves and as a squad player (at this moment in time) he would be fine.

Also how are we supposed to gage how good he is or will be when he hasn't been given the opportunity to play due to the likes of Riise being in front of him seniority wise?
                        We come not to play.

He was indeed (and scored a great goal vs Arsenal ) BUT he too was limited, did not have the required pace to make it in the Premiership, from what i've seen of Insua i really do feel he has the right attributes to be a success at Left back, pace, good passing skills, good mentality.

There is a reason to why he was voted the best defender in the U20 WC and he is still only 18.
