Did an Aurelio thread recently and as such completely agree that he's by far the best player we have in that position.

Quality-wise he's about the same as Riise defensively, but a class apart going forward. He's also very handy to have around for dead ball situations.

        Fair point.

Thought the free-kicks we had against City were more suited to Gerrard to be honest but would hope Fab gets a chance if we get a decent opportunity against Wigan.

Aurelio is a slight improvment on Riise but he aint a long term solution. He is good going forward(typical Brazilian) but in defence he is a bit suspect.
A decent tackler, crosser, set piece taker but a defender he aint.
People here slagged off Stevie Warnock but Aurelio again is not the answer.

Warnock has done very, very well since moving to Blackburn. Wouldn't suprise me to see him get a call up in 2008.

Disciplinary side needs to be sorted though!!

agree mate he does have a bit of dirty side but he is still young and tends too dive to much ala Sunday Pub defenders.

Aurelio is heads and shoulders above Warnock, yes he isn't the fastest but his positioning is very good, he isn't caught out defensively often at all. On the ball he's in the same league as Alonso. He rarely gets beaten and he's got a great cross on him, definitely the most accurate in the squad, not that it means a lot. I hope Fabio can have an extended run injury free, he'll prove all of his doubters wrong.

I think you getting carried away here mate. I think this is typical of how some fans over rate our players. Aurelio is weak defensively, his positioning is improving but he's still very much the weak link when he plays. To compare his passing to Alonso's...well I'm lost for words on that one.

Auerlio is barely an improvement on JAR at prsent. If, and its a big if, his defensive side of the game improves, then he will be a decent LB, otherwise he's another in our long list of LB's not upto the mark.

To be honest when he first came I was shocked by how poor his positioning seemed but when he has had a few games under his belt he seems to improve. I would say he is at least on a par with Riise defensively but improves in two key areas:

1/ Ball retention he is much calmer in possession and his passing into midfield is streets ahead of JAR.
2/ Crossing - his balls into the area are consistently dangerous.

He isn't any sort of long term answer due to a combination of his injury proneness, the fact he doesn't hit the ground running when he returns from injury and that his defending isn't good enough to make up for his not outstanding pace or strength. Most attacking fullbacks who succeed in the PL are outstanding athletes (Evra, Eboue, Cole, Cliche, Sagna) in at least one of the latter attributes in the first two cases in both. However I do think he suits our style of play well and can do a good job and offer a notable improvement on Riise.

He gets stuck in aswell, never pulls out of a challenge.
Think his positional awareness needs to be worked on, but he has got the making to become a very good solid left back.
