So Fernando needs a decent strike partner...

Do we need a support striker or a second finisher? I think we need someone to take the workload off Torres and can chip in with around 15-20. Torres can be the 25-30 goals man. Someone who can roam in behind, keep the ball better, has a physical presence, very creative and very intelligent. I can only think of Van Der Vaart who has certainly stepped up the plate at Hamburg.

Could we afford 20m for Berb? The beast couldn't do the biz at Arsenal? Is Diego a little lightweight?
Not dissing what you say lad just playing devils advocate. For the record I think Berbatov would be the perfect foil for Torres.
Dare we believe

Just naming some good players. I think we have become a very good team now playing some very decent football and we only need to replace Pennant, Kuyt and Voronin to go all the way. I know Babtista did not do well for Arsenal but I have a feeling Benitez rates him.Originally posted by blacky View PostCould we afford 20m for Berb? The beast couldn't do the biz at Arsenal? I also like Jones the Sunderland striker. I think he has more technique and better close control then people give him credit for and in a better team with a partner like Torres he could be a vast improvement on probably all the other three strikers we have.

my first choice would be berbatov, he is so intelligent, can play in the premiership and he would create tons of chances for torres and score some himself, diego is a good idea he has been doing great in germany the last 2 seasons scored 9 goals in 17 matches this season-----------\\|//

I like fowler as much as the next liverpool fan, but we gotta admit that he's over for liverpool (and that's a shame.. all rafa's fault).
Diego would be a good partner if torres will be playing the lone striker up front. Milan uses a similar arrangement with Kaka in the role of supporting attacking midfielder.

We need 4 strikers: 2 regulars / automatic choices of sufficient class, 1 lucky goalscorer / of sufficient class to come in if 1 of the 2 automatic choices is out (dare I say it a la Solskjaer), and 1 up and coming Striker of sufficient quality to come in if we are desperate.
So the 4 would be:
Torres (automatic choice if fit and on form)
New Striker (automatic choice if fit and on form)
Owen (lucky / goalscorer 1st change choice)
3th Striker (e.g. Kenwynne Jones)
I admit I was astounded when we were linked with him - so i've been keeping half an eye on him recently. He might be a good option as 4th striker -but yet to be fully convinced. He's certainly got a physical presence and could be our "Drogba"-type / impact player if we move Crouch on.
But I like someone else on here think Benitez has half an eye on Baptista. Don't know why - just a feeling.
Personally I'd like to see a Beardsley type up with Torres, but there aren't too many like him around.
If Owen's available for £4m or less we simply have to sign him - our alternative goalscoring striking options are currently woeful.

My thoughts exactly. A creative forward who can both score and create would be the best. Torres can lead the line, and the new one can play him through, dribble etc. If he had a decent long shot on him too, that would be perfect.
Pandev could be this player, if not, someone like Nasri perhaps.
Gudjohnsen could be a stop gap, although I prefer a younger long term solution.
But as you say, these kinds of players are not plentiful.
I see Diego is touted as an option, but I haven't seen him enough as I hate watching the Bundesliga.--== Because the gang and the government is no different ==--
