Back Rafa.. or the Kop wilderness years could stretch on to eternity
    Brian Reade 05/01/2008

The most depressing sound coming out of Anfield this week was not the boos from the stands or the desperate words from Rafa Benitez about the title still being winnable.

It was the eerie silence from the men who run the club. A silence which continues to deafen.

When the new owners handed David Moores £88million last February, they also tossed the fans some bold pledges: "This club is not far from being the best in the world. That's what we want. We need to look at all the resources we possibly can, to compete with Manchester and Chelsea", said George Gillett. And many Kopites believed that paradise was about to be regained.

A year on, those fans are still in purgatory, completely in the dark as to the thoughts going through the heads of the club's selfstyled "custodians".

There have been soundbites and flattery but little else. The new stadium plans, which were unveiled in July, have been ripped up on cost grounds. There are stories that the debt incurred in the takeover will have to be piled on to the club, Glazer-style.

Despite reaching two European Cup Finals in three years, Benitez is frozen out due to an ill-judged outburst, and is unsure how much, if any, cash he has for the January transfer window.

One of the few world-class players, Javier Mascherano, is left in limbo, with nobody prepared to say if the club will pay the going rate for him despite his desperation to stay. Every draw (not defeat) sparks speculation about Benitez's future, fuelled by informed sources saying the owners want him out before next season.

Well Texans like plain speaking, so here's some. If taking over Liverpool now looks like an expensive error, own up and sell. If you don't want Benitez, sack him instead of waiting for him to sack himself. If you believe in the Spaniard, then honour your pledge to the fans and give him licence to compete at the top end of the January transfer window.

Despite some terrible home form and bucketloads of hysteria, Liverpool aren't that far behind Manchester United. But there is a crucial factor holding them back. Alex Ferguson has superior quality all over his squad, meaning when he rotates (which he does as much as Benitez) he gets away with it.

That's because he has been allowed to compete for a decade with the Real Madrids, Barcelonas and the Chelseas.

From the £30m cheques written for Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney, to the £18m spent on Michael Carrick and the £60m-plus he's just spent on Nani, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves. Benitez has competed with the big boys once. And bought Fernando Torres.

Critics mock his transfer dealings, and there's been the odd howler, but last January, with little money, he brought in Alvaro Arbeloa and Mascherano. Runaway successes both.

If he was allowed to sell Peter Crouch, Momo Sissoko and Scott Carson this month, he could show a £15m profit from his own dealings.

Under Gillett and Tom Hicks (inset) he's had one transfer window, spent a net £24m on Torres and two outstanding prospects - Ryan Babel and Lucas Leiva.

So why don't the American businessmen do what they do best. Disregard personal differences, look at the hard facts and realise Benitez deserves more, not less, freedom to buy.

Starve him of funds, force him into a corner, and he will leave for a top European club with genuine ambition, along with most of the class talent he has brought to Anfield.

Then those pledges of a year ago will be truly tested as they give another manager the chance to start again, with a "five-year plan" and little financial muscle.

Down that road lies only one certainty. Liverpool will undoubtedly emulate Manchester United.

By going for 26 years without winning the league. Or even Chelsea, by going 40.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Those journos are really lazy. Chelsea didn`t win for 50 years.

I agree that only with Rafa we can move forward. Whatever people say all we are lacking is a bit of killing egde.

Looking back at games we should but didn`t win I would say that we are not million miles from a title, we are a ****ing yard from it:

a yard that prevented Alonso from scoring vs Arsenal and putting that game to bed
a yard too low from Crouch header vs Blackburn that allowed bentley to clear off the line
a yard too low when Harry volleyed against scum and anderson cleared off the line
a yard after Dirk header vs Citeh

Except game vs bitters ( God bless Marc Clattenburg ) we didn`t have to many lucky breaks this season. Then injuries played big part in weakening our team. Looking at the table it is difficult to be optimistic but still I know that as long as Rafa is our menager our future is in safe hand.

It does appear when we need a liitle bit of lady luck to shine on us we don't really get it, I mean look at Chelsea against us they get a penalty which should never have been given in a million years, again in the Carling cup fat Frank gets a goal off a massive deflection and then against the Barcodes they are awarded a goal which couldn't be further offside. Scum get a goal off a miss-hit shot with their only real attempt at goal.
I'm not saying all our problems are down to a lack off luck but it certainly doesn't help not really getting any!

If we are relying on more luck then we really do have problems.

Anyway as Gary Player once famously said "The more I practice, the luckier I get."

Like I said, our problems aren't purely down to a lack of luck but it would be nice to get a bit more. I suppose it's a case of when things are on the up for you it appears that you get that little bit of luck you need and when as in the case of LFC things aren't going your way that little bit of luck which sometimes makes the difference deserts you as well.

Not a bad article. Nothing new really, but perhaps laid out in simpler terms that might make it clearer for Raffa doubters to see the facts.

Having said that I think all the Raffa doubters have their minds firmly made up so I think it's pointless trying to get them to back the manager and not criticize.
No, no, no.........I'm only scary 'cause I'm hairy

Big year for me 2008, hope it all goes well for me, oh, and you lot too!

Excellent article. Like someone has already said, maybe this will open the eyes of some fans as they realise what Rafa has been up against.
If Rafa is forced out or sacked then i think the club will slowly die a death

He needs proper backing this summer. I dont mean 'spin' backing like he got the summer just gone with phrases like 'its the most Liverpool have ever spent on transfers' which didnt include 'the most Liverpool has received in transfers fees' added on.

He needs a minimum £40mill Net and to be allowed to sell who he wishes. If thats allowed and with Babel and Lucas ready for next year, with a sprinkling of the youngsters coming through then i think a genuine title challenge is on the cards.

Will it happen though that is the question? Rafa needs to be allowed bring in 2 - 3 quality players in the 15-20 million pound bracket to complete his squad IMO (one of them is Masch)

                            agree with you.

my opinion is we are only a few players short of the big teams. maybe 4-7. that many decent players however will prob cost around 100m odd. we are 2 years from the prem despite all our hopes and dreams.

rafa aint going to get that to spend even in next 2 transfer windows, even with new investors unfortunately

I don't know how accurate it is, but it certainly hints at everything that I'm concerned about.

If the club is beyond their means, then I really hope they admit their mistake and sell up to someone who can drive us forward, and not hold onto it in the vain hope of making dividends and big capital gains.

Gutted that we've been stuck with these two and the uncertain times that will inevitably lie ahead. They came in with a whirwind of publicity, a blitzkrieg of a PR campaign to reassure the fans this was no Glazer-style takeover, no debt on the club, new stadium, wave dollars to signify there's money for the manager. Less than a year later what have we got? Speculation over the manager's job security, stadium plans in limbo, tight purse strings, club about to be burdened with debt, two owners who talk and talk but say nothing honest or any substance, while the Glazers quietly get on with it, signing the cheques as the Mancs go on to win trophies.

Time for Gillett & Hicks to put up or shut up. Or preferably **** off.
