The way I see it, if we get two world class players in two key positions, we'd be championship material. Are you saying going out and buying those players is akin to "buying a title challenge"? Earlier today you were advocating Mourinho as a replacement for Rafa, praising him for winning the league having spent £89m.

The point is this: our rivals every summer are going out and spending millions on world class players. You want the best man as manager, but now you're saying we should be able to compete with them without going out and buying a world class player every summer because that would be "buying a title challenge"? Seems like you want the "best man" as you call him, but want him to fight handicapped against impossible odds in the process.

I want our manager to be given as much money as we can afford to give him.

That said I expect him to construct a balanced squad and develop a system of playing that we can then clearly identify as the modern "Liverpool way". I honestly don't think Rafa has done either, as evidenced by examples such as going 4-3-3 against Reading away or 4-5-1 against Wigan at home.

Luton was almost a perfect example of this, we played with a desperate lack of width at times, started the second half 4-3-3 but ended up doing 4-5-1 almost at times with Yossi off Crouch and Kuyt dropping back into a right-midfield position. It was just madness.

Roman was there one season before Jose and Ranieiri would have won the league the yr he was replaced.IMHO.

If that's the case I think it takes a lot of the gloss off Rafa's reputation.

No I dont want us to buy the title, I want us to be competitive, and in order to do that we have to go out and buy the likes of Torres. The alternative is to buy Pachecos and Brunas and Leivas and Babels and wait for a few years for them to reach their peak.

89 million pounds to turn a team which finished runners up to "the invincibles" to the team which won the premiership breaking the points tally and the number of goals scored.
Rafa's spent a lot more turning a team which finished 4th into a team which finished 5th, 2nd and 3rd.

You're right DJS, the :whatever: smiley hides the fact that I'm not able to come up with anything resembling a good argument. So in that case, I'll just resort to calling you a half-wit and following it up with a smiley. Is that ok or have you copyrighted that method of posting?

But nah, it's not been the most pleasant day and it's genuinely a shame that some people have to go down that route.

Polo criticised me for using the :whatever: and icons (not sure why, surely they're there to be used?) but dhavlos has been using some of them a fair bit too today. I'm sure he's worried that he'll be ticked off too...
