I think he's deployed the way he is, right wing-cum-right half-cum 5th or 6th midfielder simply because he CANT play as an out and out striker, with the best will in the world he doesnt have the ability imo.Originally posted by NICKZS View PostIn fairness to him he's only in that kind of position about once a year. I don't think he's good enough either, but the way he's been deployed hasn't helped his record this season. If you've lost your faith in love and music the end won't be long

Well, regardless of the quality of the Dutch league, his record over there would suggest otherwise (you don't score a goal a game if you are physically incapable of playing as an out-and-out striker).Originally posted by Joe Le Toff View PostI think he's deployed the way he is, right wing-cum-right half-cum 5th or 6th midfielder simply because he CANT play as an out and out striker, with the best will in the world he doesnt have the ability imo.
What I'm saying is that whilst he isn't good enough, goals like that one he scored against Chelsea are so few and far between because he seldom has the opportunity to even get into those kinds of areas on the pitch. I'm not saying we should play him as our main striker, but he would score more goals than he does now if he was played as a proper striker.

Feel good for the lad after the last couple of games, West Ham the highpoint, worked like a trooper, knows what a striker needs to feed off, Torres well Fed.
With quality added to the side, he could still well have a future with us. No excuses over his time here just work, plenty of it, the woodwork his downfall so far on the goal count, but what a willingness to keep on going.
Learning a new position, or re-learning, believe he's played other positions in his career. Could be a great ( he'll hate me for saying it) Utility player, But most importantly for him, A LIVERPOOL utility player.
Watch the 'He's ****' Replies roll in,
Ah well it's all about opinion, but the guy must get credit for getting his head down & doing the best he can,Till his goal getting form returns, it's just a matter of time.
But he IS contributing to the team, that can't now be denied. (someone will).
I wish him nothing but Good luck, for how ever long he wears our shirt, & works as hard as he has.

From "deadly striker" to "utility player"!
He'll be well pleased.
He's come back to some form which is good, but I can't quite believe some of the OTT praise. A half-decent performance from Dirk is hailed in some quarters as "great", but this is purely down to the very poor standard he's set so far this season.
I'd also dispute West Ham being a high point. One great assist, one flukey one and some desperately poor control. There were a couple of instances when Dirk lost the ball needlessly and in dangerous arears that led to West Ham attacks.
He was better both against Inter and Bolton, IMO.
But I'd agree that this has been better than we're used to seeing. Maybe he has a future after all. We wouldn't get much for him anyway so perhaps he can be a utility squad player next season - as well as he's done he has little or no future in that position on the right of a 4-2-3-1. As has been pointed out numerous times already, we need a more skilful player in that position and someone who is more of a goal threat. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Kuyt is working very hard as usual, but he will ultimately be replaced as second choice striker this Summer and will be a bit part squad player next season, unless he decides to leave of course.
Just lacks the top quality but cannot fault his effort or commitment."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley

He will be replaced yes, for sure,as an out and out striker, but he's the type of player i'd like as a so called Squad player. Each to their own of course.Originally posted by looprevil View PostKuyt is working very hard as usual, but he will ultimately be replaced as second choice striker this Summer and will be a bit part squad player next season, unless he decides to leave of course.

He can be accused of trying too hard sometimes, But he provided 2 goals for Torres, he'll be pleased, i'm glad for that, As for his future on the right he's not going to be 1st choice, maybe not even 2nd, in any position, but as a squad player, if he kept his head down, no moans, worked as ever, i'd take that. (would he, who knows).Originally posted by ShaggyAlonso View PostFrom "deadly striker" to "utility player"!

I sort of meant the high point was The Win last night, & for him to know he provided Torres with 2 out of 3, wont do him any harm that,(as You say..A Great Assist). I get frustrated watching him sometimes too, i just want him to do well, as i do all who wear the shirt.
Your criticism of his performance on the right & your assertion we need better quality in that position, i believe i more or less inferred that with my view that a utility player could be his best hope of staying with us.
My overall opinion was meant to be that i guess i'm kind of happy to see a player who's had such a hard time here do something good on the park, & contribute to a great win, an important one at that.
Of course Shaggy, you could have just said 'Yeah one of his better games'. I know i know, it's all about debate & opinion.

I don't think you are right - I think he is really good option there. I'd like a better one but as a part of the squad and one that gels a team that gets the best out of Gerrard and Torres in that formation it would be hard to complain.Originally posted by ShaggyAlonso View PostFrom "deadly striker" to "utility player"!

In recent weeks he has a rate of assists that most genuine RMs would love to have. There were three occasions I remember Dirk giving the ball away (I'm sad and was watching for it) in dangerous situations and he won the ball back or forced a throw in each time.
It was also notable that the West Ham fullbacks were going with both his and Babels runs which is a huge improvement on what has happened earlier in the season and contributed to the amount of space there was in the middle."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
