Good point about the defensive records of the teams he's managed, but I'd still bring him in, we're crying out for someone, even if it's just to improve positioning and communication between the centre backs.

Could be a good move for Hyypia, hopefully it would open Rodgers' eyes too.

I noticed that myself earlier. Not sure how many coaches teams normally have, but from a layman's perspective, we definitely look a bit imbalanced, especially as we're not doing great on the injury front.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

There has got to be a big difference between managing a team and coaching individual players about positioning and technique. Failure to set up a team to keep it tight at the back doesn't mean he wouldn't be able to improve Lovren's game for example. This is Sami ****ing Hyypia (), get him in.

I would try and tempt Hansen on a temporary part-time contract.

I know a good pundit doesn't necessarily equate to a good coach, but Hansen was fancied to make a great manager/coach, but he didn't fancy it.

I also know he retired from BBC for a reason and probably wouldn't want to get involved, but I'm sure he'd answer our SOS if approached.

That is a good point. However, it really leaves us with no evidence that he's good at coaching or tactically setting up a defence when he isn't in it.

I guess his experience with us would give him the authority both with other coaches and the players that would give him a chance. I do however feel that assuming good players will make good coaches is flawed.

This seems a much worse suggestion. I do like the idea of Brendan talking to people like him though to try to get some different ideas on defending and defensive organization.

I was trying to think of other out of work coaches managers who would be worth talking to or employing. I do wonder if there would be value in Rodgers talking to Tony Pullis. Although you would have to hope he didn't take everything on board.

                  Why?

I was thinking we take a similar approach that Houllier took when he brought Rush back for a while to help our underperforming strikers (although looking at the stats, perhaps my memory is a bit skewed as it doesn’t seem as successful as I remembered). Either way, individually our defenders are not bad players, so if Hansen could have a positive impact on their game, give them some advice and get them through this confidence crisis, then maybe we could forge a decent partnership out of two of them.

Clarke would have been a decent shout on paper if he didn’t recently take the Reading job.

I think my feeling is that if the Rush experiment had been wildly successful then he would still have a role (or would at least have had one longer term than he did).

I guess it depends on what we mean by coaching and what we feel the problem is. For me it is systemic and not about the individual players. As such a former player who has studiously avoided coaching or any other occupation in which his opinions would be tested in practice seems a bad bet. However, I take your point in terms of the fact that if we believe individuals have confidence issues or minor foibles to be ironed out that someone with his experience might have something to offer.

I personally think what we need is someone who Rodgers has confidence in an listens to. Imposing someone without that is unlikely to help.

Different skill sets - being a great player to being a great coach. Why this obsession with looking back to ex-players I don't know, other than it being a sentimental and romantic notion.

Just bring in a great defensive coach - regardless of their name.

I'm sure there are loads of good defensive coaches in the game. I'm just not sure we have any at LFC.
