Former Liverpool defender Rigobert Song has been confirmed as the new Cameroon head coach on the orders of the country's president, Paul Biya.

The 45-year-old replaces Toni Conceicao, who led the national team to a third-placed finish at January's Africa Cup of Nations.

Song is the country's most capped player, making 137 appearances for the Indomitable Lions.

A statement said Cameroon needed "a new breath".

"On very high instructions from the President of the Republic, the coach of the men's national football team, Mr Antonio Conceicao, has been replaced by Rigobert Song," Cameroon's sports minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi said.

"The Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) is invited to take the necessary measures for a rapid and harmonious implementation of these very high directives."

The appointment would be unusual because Fifa rules require any member association to be independent and avoid any form of political interference.

Conceicao had led Cameroon to World Cup qualifying play-offs and they will play Algeria in a two-legged tie in March for a place at Qatar 2022.

Song, who also played for West Ham in England and had spells in France, Italy, Germany and Turkey during his playing career, also featured at four World Cups and won the 2000 and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations titles.

He was most recently the coach of the Cameroon Under-21 side. In 2016 Song suffered a "cerebral haemorrhage" and had to be evacuated to France for treatment.

Former Liverpool and Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin has spoken of how he and his family fled Moscow in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Voronin had been the assistant manager with Dynamo Moscow for the last two years after ending his playing days there, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine compelled him to flee the country.

Speaking to German newspaper Bild, Voronin detailed his hurried flight from Moscow to Germany.

"We got out of Moscow before it was completely blocked. But we couldn't land in Düsseldorf so we flew via Amsterdam," he said.

"My father, my mother-in-law, my wife and children are here now. The little ones went to the German school in Moscow. But school doesn't matter now.

"I've been unwell for four days. Really bad. When I see all the pictures from my homeland, when I see the news. It's all as unreal as a movie, but a horror film. I have hardly any words left."

Voronin claimed that most people in Russia have little idea of what is happening in Ukraine due to tight reins being kept on the media.

"I and many other Ukrainians have friends in Russia and they are our friends and relatives. And then they attack us, Putin attacks my country. So many people have died already. They are children of mothers - Ukrainian and Russian.

"Nobody in Russia knows about it. It's not shown on TV there - 90% don't even know what's happening. Putin doesn't care about the people. It harms not only us, but also the Russian people."

"My thoughts and my heart are in Ukraine. I have friends in Kharkov, in Kyiv, in my hometown of Odessa. I get messages every five minutes. It's hard to bear, I just want to help. With money, whatever.

"I don't know if I should say it, but if I were in Ukraine right now, I'd probably have a gun in my hand too."

In a short message on Twitter, Dynamo Moscow claimed that Voronin had left the club via 'mutual agreement'.

                  That cannot possibly be right

Always thought he was nearly 30 with us, but that would make him about 21/22? He'd been to 2 world cups before he got to us FFS.

                          Poor Albie.

Looks like he’s suffered a bad knee injury, possible ACL.

John Toshack... Where is he now?

                            Out of the ICU

John Toshack: Former Real Madrid, Swansea and Wales manager out of Covid-19 intensive care

Former Wales manager John Toshack is no longer in intensive care after being admitted to hospital in Spain having contracted Covid-19.

The 72-year-old was hospitalised last month, reportedly suffering from pneumonia brought on by coronavirus.

Toshack, who managed Real Madrid twice, Real Sociedad and Swansea City, is now breathing without the aid of a ventilator.

He has also been able to speak to members of his family.

A former Liverpool striker, he also played for both Cardiff City and Swansea.

Toshack scored 13 times in 40 games for Wales before twice becoming the national team manager, in 1994 and from 2004 to 2010.

In all he has taken charge of more than a dozen clubs around the world and famously took Swansea from the old Division Four to the First Division.

His most recent job was as manager of Persian Gulf Pro League side Tractor, which he left in September 2018 after just three months in charge.
