I think Alis injury early 19/20 is a big factor also
True. It was Ali who missed most of the first 10 or so games. Then by the time he returned, it was Matip who was unavailable to complete the CL Final XI.
I think 2 of the biggest contributors to that stat are Matip missing most of 19/20 and Virgil almost the entirety of 20/21, at the end of which Gini left.

Just saw a post on fb saying John Barnes has been appointed as a LFC ambassador.
Such a great guy and player, and a proper legend. Let's hope they have binned Owen off.

At the time, i dont think gini was first choice. He was 2nd choice for all of the midfield positions (and even played CB) but i think it is fair to say that Henderson and fabinho were at their peak then and Oxlade or Keita were also ahead of him in the pecking order.
Gini didnt even start the 4 nil v barca
Gini was 1st choice. Ox missed the entirety of that season and Keita only played sporadically.

He started 32 PL and 11 CL games for us that season The Barca game was the only one he was sub in, I seem to remember being surprised that he didn't start that one
