When was the last cup final we won the easy way or relatively comfortably?
All three in that treble were crazy, Istanbul was crazy, West Ham and Cardiff also went to pens. I guess the '03 league cup final against Man utd?The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Sunderland 92 was certainly a comfortable one. As I say maybe the league cup final against Man utd in 2003 we won 2-0 in normal timeThe only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Re Sunderland... I remember Brucie kicked the ball out in the second half for a corner because he was bored...Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostSunderland 92 was certainly a comfortable one. Not sure where else to put this but Sky have been showing highlights of good PL matches and goals in games between 2 teams (I was watching the Liverpool-Newcastle goals amongst others) but it struck me how shockingly bad our defence was in the 90's. And some of the goalkeeping from David James makes our current keepers look amazing
I dread to think what the reaction on here would have been had it existed then

tbh I've always felt the same.Originally posted by brightred View PostI over stated it, sorry.
Not a **** year year but not the best either. I was born in 1969. Grew up with winning everything year after year. Just don't think that that treble and the manner in which we won in was the best.
There are better trebles!Really?

Houllier has taken some flack but he certainly made us a better organised and disciplined team. Built from the back (Henchoz and Hyypia with Hamann in front of them).
Another MASSIVE game

His "project" was certainly on the right track initially. He made us difficult to beat and the back 4 of Babbel, Hyypia, Henchoz and Carragher at lb - with Didi sitting in front - was as solid as a rock.Originally posted by Rigadon View Post

Bringing in the likes of Gary McAllister on a free transfer only added to the sense that this manager knew his onions.
It was the next phase of the project that he ****ed it up. Could have had Damien Duff and Anelka. But instead he bought Cheyrou, Diouf and Diao. That was where it went tits up for GH. To be fair, Moores and Parry must have thought he was the mutts nuts because they tried to help GH rectify that with the signing of Kewell the following summer but that didn't exactly work out as planned either.
Basically GH ****ed up in the transfer market - despite a strong start.
His man-management left a lot to be desired. He bigged up most of his signings when they were unveiled. People like Cheyrou, Traore, Biscan, Kirkland, Diouf, Diao, Diomende were all communicated as big arrivals when signed - unveiled as the next "insert current at the time world class player in that position". So when a player like Bruno Cheyrou wasn't the "new Zidane" then he was always going to be a let-down. Similarly, LeTallac and Pongolle were supposed to be Ballon d'Or contenders in waiting!!!
He also bombed out Robbie Fowler. And if you do that, then who you replace him with must be at least as good. He ultimately replaced him with El Hadji Diouf. He should have been sacked after that season.
I do think a team of something like:
----------------------------DUDEK-----------------------------
BABBEL-------HENCHOZ----------HYYPIA------CARRAGHER
----------------HAMMAN-----------GERRARD-----------------
KEWELL-------------------------------------------------DUFF
---------------ANELKA--------------OWEN--------------------
could have gone toe-to-toe with the Man United and Arsenal teams of that day.
