Everyone always says 'you raise your hand to an opponent, you get sent off' so maybe every pundit, manager, coach and player doesnt know the rules too...Originally posted by The Red Cardinal View Post'Raising your hands' isn't a red card offence - there's no such offence in the rules actually. If the ref gave a red card, then it must have been for one of the very few circumstances in which red cards are given - of which violent conduct is one. The others couldn't apply in this situation, so by definition he was sent off for violent conduct.
As for violent conduct, that wasnt remotely violent.

Sorry DJS I wasn't disagreeing with you. It certainly wasn't 'violent' as you and I would seem to interpret the word. I was just saying for him to be sent off, it must have been for the offence of 'violent conduct' as the rules only allow red cards in certain circumstances - and they are (if I remember them) violent conduct (typcially 'off the ball'), serious foul play (on the ball ie dangerous tackles a la Eduardo/Taylor), spitting, denying a goal scoring opportunity, foul and abusive language or 2 yellow cards.Originally posted by DJS View PostEveryone always says 'you raise your hand to an opponent, you get sent off' so maybe every pundit, manager, coach and player doesnt know the rules too...

While everybody does say the 'raise your hands' bit it's only as a form of violent conduct - there is no distinction.
The above facts belong to everybody; the opinions to me; the distinction is yours to draw...

You're taking what they say too literally mate, they mean it as raising your hands in a violent manner.Originally posted by DJS View PostEveryone always says 'you raise your hand to an opponent, you get sent off' so maybe every pundit, manager, coach and player doesnt know the rules too...

As already said raising your hands isn't an offence. Violent conduct is."My commitment to Liverpool is 100 per cent. I would die for that Liverpool shirt. I think the club loves me and I feel the same, no matter what the situation." - Pepe Reina, Nov '09.

Agreed.
The red is a joke mate, a yellow at the most but a telling off for both of them would have been most appropriate action."My commitment to Liverpool is 100 per cent. Not really...the difference between getting your cheeks pinched "granny style" and having someone bitch slap you is obvious. One is mischievous, the other is not. Doesn't matter how great the contact, the minute you swing an arm at an opponent, even if you miss, it is seen as violent conduct. JA knows this, Boro know this...so why appeal?Originally posted by DJS View PostThat's fair enough mate. In terms of levels of 'violence', both offences were on a par IMO.
Put it this way, if it had been the other way round, i'd have been calling JA a cheeky bugger, but i'd have been furious at Mascher for falling for it and striking out. And the red card would have been justified for Mascher in that case.
