They did, however, they played the most turgid football i can ever recall and bought and incredible squad to sit around him.

We will continue to struggle to break poor sides down at home if we persist with mascher, we should be putting 4 past all of them without remorse.
Hang on a minute, keep those goalposts still please.

So are you accepting the fact that the Chavs won the title 2 years running with Makalele in their team week in week out?
Do you accept the fact that Makalele is a player with the same role as Mascherano?
If you accept those facts then there is no reason why Mascherano wouldn't get into a title winning team

      Now back to the topic

If only it were that simple.

I used to wonder what footballers from other countries meant when they said that the role of the 'holding player' was undervalued in English football but I'm beginning to understand.

Mascherano would get in any team in the Premiership (except West Ham ) and any team with really top attacking players needs a defensive midfielder to plug the holes so we don't get hit on the counter attack. I'm wondering whether you understand Rafa's footballing philosoophy at all if you think there is only a need for Mascher in the 'big' games and we should just go out all guns blazing at home.

Mascherano isn't just a holding player, he can pass quite beautifully as well and if allowed can create and score goals. He adds the right balance to the team.

I'd pick Gerrard and Nando. Easy. Now i'll start thinking.

              ?

Ask any manager in the premiership (apart from Curbs) who would their ideal holding/tackling midfielder be, given the choice of any premiership player?
If you think it's some one apart from Mascherano you are deluded mate..................behave.

Mascherano would walk into any side in the Premiership. Given the choice ok Mascherano or Hargreaves, I know who most people would choose.

Having a player like that in the side will allow other players to attack and push further forward. There is no doubt that fat Frank wouldn't have got as many goals if he had to actually track back once in a while because he knew Makelele would be there covering.

As for the others, Torres and Gerrard obviously.
Twin boys - now arriving late August 2008.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!

Everyone seems to be agreeing about james in goal and i know he is a good keeper but surely a couple of small errors recently by pepe hasnt demoted him to below james.
                        in january we were doomed.

in august we will rise from the ashes of ****e and march on again

                          ---------------Cech----------------
                          ------------------------------------
                          ---Ferdinand---Terry------Vidic-----
                          -----------------------------------
                          -----------Mascherano-------------
                          -----------------------------------
                          Ronaldo---Gerrard---Fabregas---Hleb
                          ------------------------------------
                          ---------Rooney--------------------
                          -----------------Torres-------------

For 4-4-2 I'd drop Vidic and Mascher and put in Sagna and Evra.
                          Forwards.......

There's no way I'd have Jaymo in goal instead of Pepe. Considering how much Cech gets injured and Van Der Saar's age I think we've got the best number 1 in the Prem.
