Tony Barrett:
STEVEN GERRARD paid tribute to his Liverpool team-mates and told them they can be proud of their efforts despite being denied a place in the European Cup final by Chelsea.
Avram Grant’s side will now meet Manchester United in the first all-English final – but only after being pushed all the way by Liverpool in a pulsating semi-final tie.
Chelsea’s 3-2 victory in last night’s second leg was cruel on the Reds, who had threatened to upset the odds by dumping the Londoners out of the competition.
And, though bitterly disappointed to miss out on a Moscow showdown with arch rivals United, Gerrard insists Liverpool did themselves proud at Stamford Bridge.
“It just wasn’t to be,” he said. “Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and admit it wasn’t your night.
“We gave it absolutely everything and I was as proud to be captain of the team last night as I have ever been.
“Even after going behind we kept on fighting and looking to get back into the game and when we managed to do that it looked like we could even go on and win it.
“Like I said, it wasn’t to be, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort. You have to give Chelsea credit, they are a good side – you don’t get through to European Cup finals unless you are.”
Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel struck Liverpool’s goals, but those were not enough to stop Chelsea from reaching their first European Cup final, thus ending Rafa Benitez’s hopes of landing any silverware this season.
His captain now believes everyone at Anfield has to recover from this defeat as quickly as possible and look towards next season.
“We’ve all got to look forward because it’s never easy to lose a game like this,” he said. “We were all desperate to win the European Cup again, especially for our fans, who were magnificent again last night.
“The backing they gave us was incredible and we’re just gutted that we could not repay their support by getting through to the final.
“Hopefully, we will go into next season with a stronger squad because that could make a big difference.”
Torres (tight hamstring) and Martin Skrtel (knee) were today being assessed by Liverpool’s medical team at Melwood after being substituted through injury in last night’s defeat. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Seriously though, wasn't that only the Birmingham game?Originally posted by Joe Le Toff View Post

or instead of that what about the games at home this season when he plonked him on the bench from the first whistle.
The only other time he did it in the Prem was away to Pompey.
So that's twice.

And Fergie rested Ronaldo in their biggest game of the season at the business end of things at Stamford Bridge, they lose and noone bats an eye lid.
I swear that there's hundreds of horrible little men who only post when we lose because they just can't let an oppoortunity to slate Rafa slip by."My commitment to Liverpool is 100 per cent. I would die for that Liverpool shirt. I think the club loves me and I feel the same, no matter what the situation." - Pepe Reina, Nov '09.

Is that all you can really think of to say?Originally posted by LFC1892 View PostThere was no sign of any problem with Torres prior to him being taken off. Benitez is covering his ass for a horrendous tactical decision IMO.
It's particularly gauling that that donkey Kuyt played the entire game instead.
Pathetic

So Rafa is lying because he'd rather try and cover up perceived 'errors' from monkeys like you than stick to his guns and back his methods?Originally posted by LFC1892 View PostThere was no sign of any problem with Torres prior to him being taken off. Do you know the slightest thing about the man? If there was one thing you could say about Rafa it's that he always stands by his decisions and no matter what pressures are placed on him he never changes his methods. If he says Torres was injured he was ****ing injured. Your lack of respect for our manager is stomach turning."My commitment to Liverpool is 100 per cent. I would die for that Liverpool shirt. You obviously missed my earlier post. He was unable to stride out, clearly being hampered by a leg injury.Originally posted by LFC1892 View PostThere was no sign of any problem with Torres prior to him being taken off. Benitez is covering his ass for a horrendous tactical decision IMO.

I don't know who these people think they are..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.
