    Have to agree with you.

We played really well in the second half of the season. I think Rafa is considering the wisdom of tinkering too much.

We're not that far off. Hopefully our biggest signing will be DIC.

Apart from that I feel really down
    I love Sarah

If we can sign two world class players in the summer to significantly improve those positions rather than spending our budget on squad players we can challenge next season, we're closer than we have been points wise in ages, we've had our best goal difference for ages also so these facts suggest we aren't too far away, we don't need a major squad overhaul a couple of first team players could make all the difference
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

tbf mate, i think everyone knows where you stand on rafa's spending and im finding it quite tiresome to have to point out again that with player sales he has spent about 75 million net over 4 years.

if we get 12 for crouchy and possibly another 15 -20 for the other dead wood rafa will be buying with earned money.

as them equalling and beating the record is getting closer i've actually just got to hold my hands up. im not going to have a nervous breakdown about us not being the greatest in the country again. tbh its a bit of a joke isnt it that we haven't won it for 19 years yet have since then been talking like we're entitled to it.

yes we're rivals but 18-20 league titles is a stunning achievement and fergie has had a great dynasty. (only average in europe tho even if he does win this one). our demise is our own fault so you can't blame another club for that. we realistically should have been battling it out with them rather than arsenal say but we're gone backwards. blame who you like, moores, parry, souness, evans, houllier but all good things come to an end.

so fair play to man u, i would despise their cuntish fans if it wasnt for some good mates - who are irish not mancunions so its not the city rivalry which is why i hate them - but as i say above, what they've achieved is great and its churlish to deny it. would we not be as bitter as everton if we throw our toys out of the pram. as i say above, its our fault we havent added to 18 and no-one elses.

Problem is, whilst i look out for Liverpools results and get to about a game a year, i dont hate Man Utd (or Arsenal, Chelsea) though.

I'm just saying it as I see it, with all the backroom stuff Liverpool could be in danger of falling behind the other 3. Having said that, there are some positives to be taken from this season, inparticular Torres, who will be even better next year.

We have most definatley NOT gone backwards this season, However, i do worry that the the top 2 will only get better next season & beyond, you can almost guarantee it, but with us it's not such a sure thing imo.

Will Torres score more goals?? How good will our signings be, if we don't sign the Villa's, Alves, etc the others WILL.

Arsenal i believe have the people involved with the club who have the money to spend, they have at least 2 investors who are mega wealthy, but i think they are being held back by the old school board at the club, unwilling to spend big, Wenger is also afraid to spend massive i believe. But all that could change, who knows.

As for us, if it's GG&TH who are to stay our owners, or just the big tosser on his own, i don't see us challenging on a regular basis, we could get close, nick a title if we're lucky, but we will still be stifled due to their lack of cash.

Also i expect teams like Spurs, Villa, Newcastle to do better than they have done, god forbid maybe even Neverton, but it all adds up imo to us needing to watch our backs, rather than looking forward to overtaking & passing the likes of the Scum & the Chavs.

Again, this could all change with new owners, but that looks as unlikely as ever, with Hicks anyway.

I am actually feeling very positive in regards to next season, contrary to some of the posters here, I believe we have made remarkable overall progress in each season Rafa has been here.

Yes, United did win the league again; however, we actually lost less games than United and two of three defeats came against United. Ronaldo was a phenomenon this season, 31 goals, 7 assists and countless free kicks won in advanced positions; can he repeat this feat or remain injury free?

Our main issue this season was points dropped through drawn games, it is much easier to turn draws in victories than defeats. As mentioned in a different post, these bad results were concentrated during the December - February period, were the loss of Agger without cover and the pressure on the manager had a huge impact on our overall performance. I know it's hypothetical, but if you omitted winter, we would surely by challenging for the title.

One of main issues we have had over the past few seasons was lack of goals, this season we have scored more goals overall than any other club in England and have more than five players who have scored over 10 goals. This newfound firepower should give us hope when looking to turn these draws into victories.

We also have shown great resilience at times, if you recall the Houllier era were we never able to comeback when going a goal down, we have shown time and again that we can bounce back, demonstrated as early as the first match against Villa.

The reserves and youth setup appear in stronger position than they have for over a decade; no longer a graveyard of overpaid first team players going through the motions. It is now a group of hungry, young and talented players, who are looking to make the step up to first team football and even if they do not, they are not draining the wage bill and we may be able to sell them on for a tidy profit.

One of Rafa’s strengths can be his ruthlessness; players who have not performed will be moved on to be replaced with players Rafa believes will do a better job. The transfer market is not an exact science but overall if you look at Rafa’s record in the transfer market, it has been excellent. Compare today’s team with the one Houllier left on his last game in charge:

Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia, Steve Finnan, Harry Kewell, Steven Gerrard, Dietmar Hamann, Danny Murphy, Emile Heskey, Michael Owen SUBS : Milan Baros, Bruno Cheyrou, Paul Harrison, Stephane Henchoz, Florent Sinama Pongolle

Players that will be moved on, most likely will be moved for a profit, no longer do we loan players out and still pay a portion their exorbitant wages only to release them on free transfers. Many are annoyed that the names being linked are not the starlets who they have honed to be football legends or the marquee names of world football; however, Rafa has rarely not delivered in this area, even if the names were not the ones we had our hopes pinned on. If you look at the comparison to United in the summer of 2006 were they finished another disappointing season, they only Carrick was the only real signing of that summer, yet they went on to win the Premiership next season.

Like the start of every season, I’ll keep on believing, I can see progress whether that’s my own myopia we’ll find out at the end of 2008/09. As this thread is about United catching us, have a look at what their supporters were thinking at this time two years ago:

Call me a sadist, but I always make a point of watching the scum celebrating when they win the league.

I don't do it to give them recognition, I do it because I feel like I need to. Because when we win it, I'll look back at how gutted I felt all the times they won and it's going to feel that much better knowing how badly they feel at that precise moment when we're all celebrating.
