With the greatest of respect this type of signing (Degen that is) is a complete unknown for almost all of us, therefore we should respect the guy and at least afford him the opportunity to show us what he is all about.

However, by targeting this level of player we have shown again how far behind in terms of resources we really are. As has been stated, Chelsea sign a 16m RB, Utd are after Alves who will cost at least 20m.

As I said, we should give him a chance, but TBH I quickly getting used to the idea that we will only be fighting for a CL spot again next season and hope to have another good CL run.
i can't remember watching degen or the new chelsea full back. but just because the can afford to sign a player for big money doesn't mean they sign value for money, see ferreira, del horno, boularhouz (spelling?) and others.

as for alves, i'm not quite sure on this one. every summer he demands a move away from sevilla but no club seems to believe he's worth the money. big name, big money move but every club seems to shy away from him. a bit like quaresma in that respect.

man utd splashed out big money for that michael jackson look-a-like yet he didn't justify his price tag so far.

the point i'm trying to get across is that every summer a club will sign a player for big money and people just look at the price tags and assume the must have bought a star.

Disagree on that one. He has looked a pretty useful player IMO.

It is all about getting Rafa the best players, and they cost top dollar which we don't have. Simple ****ed up situation.

So this season I expect a CL spot at best in the league - if we do any better it will be a massive bonus, but this is the first time in my lifetime I have not expected us to genuinely challenge for the title.

And you know the gulf between us and the top 2 is just going to get wider until we get our house in order. I feel for Rafa and I don't want to be doom and gloom but that is how I feel.

Fair comments but Sevilla have stopped Alves and demand silly money for him really because the just don't want him to leave. They know he is good and don't need to sell, yet.

I'd welcome his signing with open arms.

That picure of him and his brother on his website really turns my stomach:

But never mind, good luck Phil.

I have this feeling also, I feel rafa can close the gap between us and the top two, but actually competing against them, i am not sure, esp considering these two will be spending big this summer as usual.

Back to the point, welcome to liverpool phil.

Well I'm pleased the lad is signing for us anyway!

He seems a quick, mobile player who likes to attack the flank regularly, and this is the kind of player we need, especially in our home games. He may not cost anything but he is a regular international player - I'm already looking forward to seeing him play in the Euros next month.

We obviously don't have much money to spend this summer, and Rafa will rely on selling a few of our players for extra cash should he need to, so this type of signing makes sense - especially as he's supposedly been after Degen for a good few years now going by reports.

It seems we'll be looking for our width from our full backs more often next season and the likes of Degen, and Dossena if he signs, will offer us that, giving our more attack-minded players the licence to attack the box more often than they have.

                    Welcome to Anfield Degen!

He's an annoying player who should see at least one yellow in every game.

Since you've put it that way, I have heard of him , and it wasn't any good to be honest. A Dortmund fan said he was plain simple ****e, no way near Liverpool level...
But still, I agree that we have to wait for his first performance in the red shirt and then judge him... he has proved he knows his way around the internet, what if he's reading this topic right now, full of people slating him before he even played his first minute in our kit.
Anyway, I hope you're a good signing Degen

with degan signing dose that mean the end for either finnan or arbaloa, finnan has spent a bit of time this season injured so maybe its a no brainer signing...

carra has been used as a right back on ocasions this season so it shows how thin we are in that area,i just do not think that its a key area that needs addressing but i suppose its a start

We have enough bodies for RB, but not enough possibilities

Degen is an attacking FB much more so than any of the others you mention, so we'll be adding a new dimension to our game. Same on the left side with Dossena.
