Merson to Barry: Liverpool would be a mistake.

    Absolutely hate him..!
The last paragraph sums up what a tw@t he is, and the fact he knows nothing. Suggesting that Villa's position in the Intertoto Cup is stronger than Liverpool's in the CL Qualifiers..!! WTF.
His armband proved he was a RED. Torres, Torres.

The Reds have been chasing Barry for the best part of two months now, and the 27-year-old has reputedly demanded that he be allowed to make the switch to Merseyside.

Villa boss Martin O’Neill is determined hold onto his skipper and has so far stood firm, rejecting three bids from the North-West giants and demanding a likely unmatchable ₤18million.

And Merson believes the England international’s departure would deal an inestimable blow to the Villans.

“You can understand why Gareth wants to go to Liverpool and play Champions League football and he has been at Villa a long time,” he said in the Birmingham Post.

“But this team is really going places now under the leadership of Martin O’Neill.

“It would be an absolute tragedy if Villa lost him – he is by far and away the club’s best player.”

          Mistake

An Anfield move would not only allow Barry to fulfil his dream of competing on the European stage, but would also see him link up with close friend and England colleague Steven Gerrard.

And given the prospect of nearly doubled wages, the decision to leave Villa Park appears a no-brainer on paper.

But Merson said: “My advice to Barry would be that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

“I was at Arsenal and had a phenomenal time there but I had got to the stage in my career where I started to think less about my football and take it for granted. I went to Middlesborough but knew within a week that it was a big mistake.

“I was lucky because I went on to play at Villa and had a terrific time. I admit when it came to the time for me to leave I cried. I loved it here.”

          Week In...

It is understood Reds boss Rafa Benitez initially lined up Barry to replace Xabi Alonso, who has been in negotiations with Juventus for the past few weeks.

But both deals appear to have stalled recently, and Merson believes Barry – who has played for Villa ever since joining as a trainee – should take the opportunity to consider what effect a Merseyside move would have on his enjoyment of the game.

“Barry, from what I know of him as a player, loves to play football and likes playing football week in, week out," added the former Walsall manager. "I am not sure he would get to play football week in, week out at Liverpool.

“At the end of the day he could go there and don’t forget they still have to play in a qualifier for the Champions League and they could get knocked out and then they are out of Europe altogether. Villa on the other hand are in the Intertoto Cup and should progress into the Uefa [Cup].”

                  What a complete knob.

He's obviously still bitter about the fact that we beat Barcelona when he laughed off the notion of us even giving them a game
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

ex Villa player sticking up for his team - as we'd want ours to do.

                    no probs from me.

If on the off chance we lose the 3rd round qualifying tie then we go into the uefa cup anyway. So Merson shows a lack of knowledge again. Oh well, he probably has killed too many brain cells over the years to be surprised of his idiocy.

Because Merson joining Boro would be the same as Barry joining us.

Arsenal got shot of him as he was a mess at the time with his off the field problems and sold him to a smaller club who were never going to win anything so of course "the grass wasn't greener."

But Villa could fail to make it into the UEFA cup as well ...admitedly it's unlikely but still.

Although it would take a player with no ambition to choose potential UEFA Cup football over potential Champions League football
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I don't have a problem with that but its not the first time he's said something disrespectful about our club is it.

remember when he laughed about us beating Barcelona in the CL.. cant stand the man.
