This is one of the things that does my head in about football these days. Rafa's got us playing Champions league football every season, which is better than we've ever managed before, Houllier's record was hit and miss, some seasons we made it other's we didn't. I don't see how anyone can say we haven't progressed.

Since Rafa took over the Chelsea/Abramovic thing has changed the balance of power in football, so it may take longer to get where we want to be as the club needs sorting out off the pitch as well as off it! Look at the job Rafa has done and compare ther squad we have now to when he came in. If you replace him what happens? Another manager comes in with a 5 year plan, if he doesn't win league another and another, what clubs need to compete is stability (Chelsea are the exception to this as they can buy anything) Give Rafa a chance he's taking us in the right direction and we're making progress

Ok Rage, there are 'subtleties' that you don't seem to get. Rafa has made progress in the league and we're very close of winning it based on last season's effort alone. If it's not been for crucial defeats to our major rivals and failure of picking up points against them we would have been very close. This is somewhat obvious ... but not to you unfortunately.

Every team can point to 'if not for' moments.

But the margins are quite fine, depending on which way you look at it.

In terms of 11 points, you cant say we were very close. But in terms of 'if we had beaten Wigan, Birmingham, Villa, Chelsea' like we should have, then it opens up another angle to view it from and one which suggests we were close.

The team who wins it will close those fine margins, i spose that is the difference between champions and also rans.

he's had 4 seasons amigo. a minimum expectation in the league has got to be set. being out of the title race by xmas every year is not good enough.

rafa has been backed every year and he's failed to do this.

i'd like to think that the best managers don't use excuses like oh but they had more money to spend than i did. they compete regardless.

i really want him to succeed but the next time he decides to rest torres in a league game only to play him in a midweek carling cup game should be used to demonstrate why we fail to compete rather than lack of funds.

You can compete regardless, if the difference in wealth is realistic.

Before abramovich, never did the biggest spenders spend double (or more) what their rivals did. Chelsea do. Manchester arent far behind in the spending stakes. That's why manchester can still win the title despite spending less than chelsea, because the difference isnt enormous. Between chelsea and us, it is.

wenger will never get sacked - he's won too much there.

fergie will not leave this year, he'll want to beat our title haul

scolari is a good coach and will be given at least 2 seasons

rafa's had four seasons and is further away from the title than houllier was. this will be his last season if he fails to sustain a genuine challenge. if we're playing serious catch up by xmas again this season then he should go!

how can you say Wenger won't get sacked!!!! Are you on the Arsenal board. - He hasn't won anything for is it 3 seasons,(could be more can't be arsed checking) plus he has lost some of his top players recently - what happens if Arsenal slip, a few more players leave and they struggle to finish 6th, Wenger looses the dressing room, more players want out etc etc etc.

same can be said about fergie - man u slip up, struggle, could be caused by a dressing room split over ronaldo, they limp in to 4th and ferguson realises he can't take another season

What a bollocks comment regarding Scolari!?!?!? - with chelsea anything could happen, nobody knows - they are the typ of club that if they go 5 games without a win at the start of the season they will just bomb scolari out.

So for people to speculate, even argue that this could be rafa's last season is just pure ****e to me cause not one of us has a ****ing clue what goes on at the top of any major club!

As i said - i could quite easily go through every single team in the premiership and put a strong case as too why this could be their managers last season!!!

On the other hand - i could easily go through every team and put an argument as why it would be madness for each premiership team to lose their manager this season.

Football today - rafa could win the league this season and still get sacked, we could struggle to 4th and rafa could still stay due to signs of improvement etc etc etc - so this kind of speculation is bollocks

He's trying to build a winning team with the money he's allowed

He's just bought a top striker to partner the top striker..he has strength in depth in all positions and has loads of young potentially great players in the making also he's trying to improve the squad further before the season starts

And all you can say is that you think he'll be gone if he finishes second....
