I agree that too much shouldn't be read into these things and that all of the above give good reasons for skepticism. However I do think if taken with a pinch of salt they can give a reasonable guide (even if a lot of implicit assumptions may be shaky such as that the payment schedules even out and that bonuses are generally in line with the fees).

The fact that there are so many more deals that could potentially happen before the transfer deadline makes lists like this are a bit pointless at this stage of the summer.
I mean I hate Man U as much as the next man BUT Tevez isn't a done deal, and their overall wheeling and dealing is far from over with possible lucrative exits for Ronaldo and Saha. Even if they spunk a load on Berbatov or whoever I reckon we may end up outspending them, with the Barry Transfer on the cards.
The fact is we're playing catch up, so if anything, the fact we're splashing large sums of money on key players is reassuring. The main thing is that we're also doing well recouping money, and we'll probably scrap together some more once the likes of Pennant and Voronin do one.

Barry deal is going to push that to £30m, recouping money from the likes of Pennant, Voronin Itandje etc is likely to bring it back down to ~£15m then I think it depends on the sale of Alonso if we're going to sign anyone else. I expect our net spend to end up in the £10-20m range come the close of the transfer window.

They sold half their squad to Sunderland and took £20mill of us. Not sure how much they've spent themselves but Dos Santos and Modric were fairly cheap. I expect them to make a couple more signings though but they could be funding them by selling Berbetov.

spurs have donevery well in shedding some toot and getting a big fee for keane. But if berbatov goes and they dont get a replacement in time then they are very short upfront. I know they have been linked to Villa and Arshavim and pavluchenko, but they need to get moving to get at lease one of those guys in.

For me net spending only really matters if a team is having to sell players that a) want to stay and b) the team wants to keep. As such it is a more effective figure in judging the performance of teams / managers at a slightly lower level, such as getting a side into the UEFA Cup despite having a net profit on sales each season, or special cases like Arsenal where Wenger keeps them competitive with a low net spend as they have a pricey stadium to pay for.

They bought Deco & Bosingwa for a combined £24.2 million, but sold Sidwell, Bouhlarouz & Ben Haim for a combined £14 million, hence the net spend of £10.2 million...

9.) Fulham - £8.18 million net spent (about to splash out on Johnson as well)
10.) Spurs - £5.2 million net spent
11.) Wigan - £5.1 million net spent
12.) Arsenal - £5 million net spent (They are OFFICIALLY a wankfest club)

14.) Newcastle - £3 million net spent

Tainio was a big loss for us. He's a very good player and we clicked when he played. But overall, we have done brilliantly in the market this season. We managed to avoid buying dross like Ashton etc and as you say, if Berbs goes, we can bring in a couple more and even make a profit.

Fact is, last year we weren't good enough. This year, we'll be better. But still nmot up there in the top 4
