I thought Plessis was ok, it's got to be hard for him playing alongside Xabi who was utter ****e again. Got booked for a nasty challenge, could have been sent off for some petty shirt pulls etc.. set pieces were atrocious and he looked slow and laboured when they pressurised him in possession.
Plessis is a 20 year old kid playing his 3rd game, Xabi is a Champions League and European Championship winner. Wasn't much difference between them.

it's a fair comment - as i have said, i have been to-ing and fro-ing all summer over the Alonso/Barry saga - At the start of the summer I thought it would be a great deal for us, then it dragged on a bit plus alonso looked up for it pre-season and i started doubting the deal and felt that the money would be better spent elsewhere.

Now i'm unsure again - i thought he was poor throughout yesterday - off the pace and an horrific tackle in my opinion, crazy tackle and lucky to just get booked.

And set pieces!!! - ****ing hell, not just having a go at Xabi, but how can a ****ing premiership side not have one person who seems capable of consistently delivering quality from set pieces!!!! **** me!

Last sunday I played a pre-season against a ****ing **** pub team! - they had a lad who went across and scuffed his first corner to the first defender who hoofed it clear, 10 mins later he had another, he over hit it, he got ****ing slaughtered by his team mates!!! - literally ripped to bits and taken off corners for the rest of the game. Someone else took the rest and delivered quality!!! - this was a ****ing **** team, ale house players, play in a wank league, pre-season friendly hungover at 11am on a sunday morning probably don't even train mid week and certainly don't practice set pieces!!

it just baffles me that we don't seem to have anyone with any quality from dead piece situation - when we get a free kick - we may as well make sure all our defenders are in position etc and then just chip it out for a goal kick to kill some time!
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

              - seriously i have played against teams that have done this - we scored like three goals in 10 mins on the break from there corners - so in the end they had one striker taking the corner and just had the other striker in the box just in case and everyone else back in position

Defence is worrying. I can see Sunderland making a lot of diagonal crosses into the box. We seem to have this same problem for about the first 6 or 7 games of the season. Shocking really as the defence has been together for a few years now

First one to actually tell the truth about Alonso

His distribution was shi*e, his workrate was shi*e and his overall body language was of a man who didn't want to be there.

Granted Benayoun & Kuyt were also a sack of Sh1t but Alonso caused us as many problems by his poor play as the Liege midfield did themselves.

From what I've seen of spearing in the pre-season he would have done no worse alongside Plessis and we would not have cup tied Alonso costing us, potentially, milliions of pounds and the chance to bring in Barry.

What the hell is Barry going to do? We were crying out for width last night. What out ball did Xabi have? The midfield was too deep and Keane and Torres were isolated. Yossi and Kuyt were running into the centre when Liege had about 5 or 6 players packing the central midfield

So who were Xabi and Plessis going to pass to? Back into the centre and give the ball away that's what.

I find it quite ridiculous that people come on here and say we don't need wingers with the formation we play and then give Alonso and Plessis stick for how much they give the ball away. The midfield 4 practically play on top of each other. And if you're looking at giving the ball away then even Mascherano does it regularly when he plays

The way we play the two central midfielders have no out ball to the wings and can either only pass it 5 yards forward to our 'wide players', backwards, sideways or hoof it forward.

And if you want to sell Alonso then fine. However, buying Barry will not solve that problem. We need a genuine wide man to be playing and provide an out ball

It hasn't though. Agger missed nearly all of last season. Arbeloa gets shunted around from LB to RB. Dossena is new.

None of our four defenders are in the same class as say Sami or Skrtel when it comes to defending the high ball. If Skrtel had been fit then last night would have been an ideal game for him imo.

To be fair the whole front line got poor, poor service from the CM. It's hard to shine without quality service.

Our CM was poor both defensively and offensively. They better get their act together real soon now, because if they think SL were all hustle they'll see real hustle once sunderland get in among them.

Whether they are called wide men or not, Torres, Keane, Kuyt and Benni all took up positions that a "wide man" would. Xabi couldn't find them. Simple as.

Funny how I saw acres of space on the wings with no one there. Don't know what 'wide positions' they were taking up

Sarb, Firtly Plessis did as well as expected, I made no comment about his game, secondly if you look at last nights game and that of Lazio on Friday, Alonso's distribution was rank in both games, OK S.L. hustled and gave no space and Benayoun & Kuyt did not help but does that excuse every dead ball hitting the opposition and every free pass being half hearted at best?

Keane & Torres were totally isolated by a midfield that should have been marshalled better by Alonso, after all he was the supposed general out there. Granted, we do need more quality on the flanks but Alonso got all of the basics wrong last night.
