And for that reason, this weekend I'm gonna do what I've never done... pick up a few tins of Carlsberg.

They messed up big time, yeah, but by pulling out of this promotion they have surely taken a financial hit. And should they have known better? Perhaps, but outside of our support (especially outside the UK) the true story of the Rag's infamy is not widely known. Hell, I often find I have to educate our own "supporters" here in Canada

I'll do my small part to thank them for being sensitive (eventually). If you're ready to boycott when offended, surely the opposite holds true.

I live 35mins from Liverpool and I'm sat 5 yards away from a 'lifelong Red' with a copy of the rag on his desk.

Plenty of people know and don't care in this country so I'd definately have nothing against someone who isn't from these shores who's unaware of the boycott. The guy sat next to me however is simply a cock.

To be honest but they've not really been all that sensitive.

They were insensitive and should have realised beforehand.

They've pulled the campaign as they've realised it will get them more bad PR than good PR. Not for any airy fairy Mr Nice corporation reason.

40 mate and Knob is a good description. I've brought it up with him before and he just says he doesn't want to read war and peace, just wants a comic etc etc. Now I know papers like the Guardian aren't everyone's cup of tea but as a Liverpool fan why not the Mirror, Star (shudders) etc etc.

I not from Liverpool although I am aware of the anti-s*n sentiment and why, but I just read in a news article about Calrsberg dropping the promotion. In the article it says that the S*n appologised back in 2004 is that right? I might be a bit nieve but wasn't that what the campaign and boycott was about? That the sun wouldn't appologise.

                Please excuse my ignorance.

Their 'apology' came just after Wayne Rooney had signed an exclusive deal with them for serialisation of his book (or something like that) and the so called apology was purely in response to the backlash he got from Scousers, for being such a prick in signing up with them.

Furthermore, it was printed on page 7 or something, in a small box, not remotely noticeable and therefore nobody took it as being sincere.

As Kenny Dalglish told Kelvin **** head back then, either put a big front page headline saying 'We Lied' or forget about any kind of forgiveness.

                  It's too late now anyway.

I'll tell you something now mate. I lost my 19 year old cousin at Hillsborough so jump off your high horse. I hate the S** as much as anyone but how far do you want to take it? Do we stop watching Sky who run S** adverts? Fair enough to Carlsberg who have release a statement regarding it but they never meant any bad.

Carlsberg happen to be a Danish company who probably earn more in 3 days than we do in a year. They are our sponsors. They support us. Boycott the paper by all means but if Bovril give away free cubes next week are you gonna stop buying it at the match?

Boycott the Sun and hate Kelvin Mackenzie for the rest of your life by all means but please stop grasping onto straws (which it is IMO) when it comes to any link.

                            Guys,

We're got to be more than a little cautious about the "I won't do business with anyone who does business with the S*n" attitude. Our sponsors are a major international brand with business relationships everywhere. Sooner or later they will always do business with someone we don't like. Likewise the S*n is a major business, like it or not, which is a major part of News International.

If we look to boycott Carling for doing business with the S*n then how can we defend watching matches on Sky TV which is another part of News International. That should sit worse in peoples eyes - Sky TV is much closer to the S*n than Carling will ever be.

The red line should be well known - don't buy the S*n, don't read the S*n, don't give interviews to the S*n, don't even visit the S*n website, but if we stray too far down the chain of treating all who deal with them the same we'll end up cutting our own throats.

You are right in what you say above, but you are missing the point on this issue.

Carlsberg spend a lot of money on sponsorship of the club specifically to promote the image that they are "one of us", that they are supporters like ourselves. In this way they hope to build a brand loyalty amongst us fans.

If they are our main sponsor, and "one of us" as they would like us to believe, then them doing a promotion with the Sun is akin to a player doing an exclusive interview with the Sun, or an ex manager serialising his autobiography in the Sun. It is also a poor business decision by their marketing department and damages some of the brand loyalty they have built up through sponsorship.

I don't call for a boycott of anyone that associates with the paper, I agree totally with you that there needs to be a line drawn at the paper itself, and that you can't go looking for tenuous associations such as Sky, NOTW etc. But in this case it is not just another company that deals with the sun, it is our main club sponsors who are on the front of every shirt. And I do feel that Carlsberg should not be dealing with them if they want to continue to be our main sponsor.

Besides, they could always have used Tetley's or one of their other brands...

No, because Bovril don't sponsor us, and so we have no right to expect anything at all from them as a company.
