Rafael Benitez will give Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard every chance to prove their fitness for Saturday’s big clash with Manchester United.
Liverpool's two star players are still major injury doubts for the match as Gerrard continues to recover from a minor groin operation he had 10 days ago, while Torres struggles to shake off an abductor injury picked up against Aston Villa last Sunday.

"It is always more difficult to prepare for the match with injuries because you know that if they are fit we will use them, but in this case you never know," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It is better to avoid saying whether they can be available - it is difficult to say if they can play or not because they may have not played for 10 or 15 days. But they are both working hard with the physios and are improving, so there's still some time to decide."

On Gerrard, Benitez added: "You never know, he is still progressing. The key is the fitness of the player - it makes a massive difference if he has confidence. That is the main thing for him."

If Liverpool's injury fears are confirmed, Benitez believes his other players can rise to the challenge and beat Alex Ferguson's side on Saturday.

"Clearly we have enough quality in the squad, so it is always important to look to the other players and sometimes they can give more to you than the big names. They can have the same quality and passion and they also have a lot to prove to the supporters."

Rafa Benitez is still hopeful over his star duo — Gerrard and Torres — returning for our trip to Anfield. This comes in the face of Gerrard ruling himself out and Torres being out with a hamstring injury. I would think a hamstring injury takes about two to four weeks to heal and even if he does make it, I’d suspect he will be partly fit. But I do trust Rio and Vida to tackle the El Nino threat. Rio would be clearing up space in his back pocket in preparation for Anfield.

The centre back has been laid low with a stiff neck, although it looks like he might play in today’s snoozefest friendly against a good looking Croatia.

Some of our other lads are also expected to represent their respective countries. Here’s hoping for an injury free outing for them.

        Cocky friggin ********s.

Is it any wonder why we hate them so

Lol, cos we'd never say the same if say Carra ensured Tevez had a quiet game...course we would, and rightly so.

Yeah, the no pace and physical presence of a misfiring "striker" half their size is going to terrify them.

Team is probably gonna look like this with BOTH Torres & Gerrard playing:
                  Reina (GK)
                  Arbeloa (RB)
                  Carra (CB)
                  Skrtel/Agger (CB)
                  Dossena (LB)
                  Kuyt (RM)
                  Masch (CM)
                  Xabi (CM)
                  Keane (LM)
                  Gerrard (Free role)
                  Torres (STR)

                  Subs:
                  Cavalieri (GK)
                  Sami
                  Skrtel/Agger
                  Rieira
                  Yossi
                  Babel
                  Fabio Aurelio/Lucas/Plessis

I would LOVE it though if Rafa played the following:
                  Reina (GK)
                  Carra (RB)
                  Skrtel (CB)
                  Agger (CB)
                  Dossena (LB)
                  Babel (RM)
                  Masch (CM)
                  Gerrard (CM)
                  Riera (LM)
                  Keane (Deep-lying STR)
                  Torres (STR)

                  Subs:
                  Cavalieri (GK)
                  Sami
                  Arbeloa
                  Fabio Aurelio
                  Yossi
                  Kuyt
                  Xabi
Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

for a change the pressure is on united because if they lose this game they will be 6 points behind us and probably chelsea by the end of the weekend(albeit with a game in hand).

This is must not lose game for them and if we lose we will still have the same points and united will be level with us. If they lose its already looking a long way to the top.

Normally I'd say yes to that side but Agger hasn't seen a lot of action and can't see him thrown into this one.

                          18 Paul Scholes (N)
                          24 Darren Fletcher (Y)

now that both gerrard and torres are fit i'd go with

                            _________reina__________
                            arbeloa carra skertl aurelio
                            ____gerrard____masch
                            kuyt________________babel
                            _________keane__________
                            _________torres__________

if alonso also plays i'd be tempted to play gerrard instead of kuyt. i can see riera as a 2nd half sub.

too early a game for agger hence skertl and aurelio defends better so far than dossena.
