Like I said I agree to an extent, as a fan I'd like us to spend most of our budget on players that would improve the first 11, and gamble that the majority of them would play 30+ league games a season. But I can see from the managers point of view that that is a risky gamble which if something goes wrong you pay for with your jobThe only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Amen to that.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostIf the mediocrity continues, he'll pay with his job anyway.
If you buy average players, you WONT challenge, that's pretty much fact.
If you buy less players, but top quality ones, there's a fair chance that, injuries permitting, you'll challenge.
Now everyone play nice.

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

Thats what he has been doing, the last two years he has picked a top target and bought them, both of them costing his maximum transfer budget. The rest of the players have been bought by selling on players he doesnt want and most of the fans wanted rid of. If he had of had a budget of 60 million I am sure he would have bought 3 20 million pound players, just a pity we dont have that kind of money.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostYou dont have to spend it all on one player. Just identify a top player and pay what it takes. If he gets injured, that's life unfortunately. Torres is injured now, but that doesnt mean we shouldnt have bought him, does it? Injuries are part and parcel, there's always a risk and you dont NOT sign players just because they could get injured. It'd be like not leaving your house, because you could get run over.
The only real argument is if people think his squad is to big and could do with slimming down. I think it might be a bit to big, but then he was trying to sell a couple more so I think Rafa would agree himself.

All three of them are curt snipes at Rafa rather than a discussion of whether or not what Rafa's said in this piece is true or not and to what extent etc. His reasons for saying it may of course be one relevant aspect to the topic, but the manner of each of your posts is what pisses people off as it essentially centres the whole discussion around your perspective alone.
This is just one of many times this kind of thing has happened with you three lately. We can reprimand people who abuse you as a result, but we cannot change the fact that until you change the way you post someone else will have had enough of it and mouth off. A lot of people here do not share your opinions and want to be able to have their say on individual topics without seeing your wider agenda become the central theme at every oppourtunity that presents itself.
In future, please post with some regard for the individual topic and try to avoid being so provocative. Just because a thread is about something Rafa said, for example, doesn't mean it's got to be about how tenuous you think his position as manager is. There are people on this forum who are also very critical of Rafa but don't stir up the chaos you three do. It's not about what you say, it's about the way you say it and the sheer volume of forum space you make it occupy. It is destroying the level and variety of discussion on the forum, and if things don't change after this warning then our options for improving the situation are quickly reduced to one - an option we're loathe to use (being visited by PTP's 'nutter' ex is a terrifying prospect, believe me).
This topic has been overrun now, but I expect future threads to be more representative.Like blood on iron

60 million of that was on 3 players, add in Babel, Alonso and Reina it takes it up to 90 million. Pretty much what the club gave him to spend on transfers. The rest he made himself by selling squad players who werent working out to try new squad players.Originally posted by Rashid View PostWe spent £71m last summer in the last 18 months, and pover £100m in the last 2 years.

The sheer volume of anti-Rafa posts by just three posters means every thread feels like every other thread.
Rashid,Sarb and Rage,we get it,we get it,we get it.
You don`t think Rafa is good enough to manage Liverpool.WE GET IT.
WE GET IT!!!!!!

would you renew the contract of a player you didnt rate? especially if he was on extortionate wages? or would you look to replace him?Originally posted by Rashid View PostCorrect 100% true - so why then did he need to spend a further £200m on a squad who were good enough to win big trophies? Why not keep them as squad players and improve the first team as opposed to buying 50 players, where only 10 of which were an improvement?
if he was to sell all the players in his squad that he's brought in would he recieved more than 200million?
rafa is building a squad to get closer in the league whilst still making latter stages of the CL. and he's succeeding in doing that. but without massive cash injections, its not possible to do overnight. we are gaining ground to the two best clubs in europe each year. he's succeding.
you cite wenger as not getting massive capital injections but he's achieved less than rafa since we've had him here so what's your point exactly?
and before you start, utd had the championship winning squad and chelsea spent over half a billion.
your issue seems to be the league rather than the CL. but we have to prioritise progressing in the CL for the money. its that simple.

i don't think anyone would disagree with that summary but i think it is worth looking for potential that you can work with and, if it doesnt, that you won't lose too much on. but i'd say kuyt will get about 6mill, pennant looks to be 4 mill and lucas should be given time but even he's worth 3 or 4. benayoun will get us what we paid.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostThe point is, when the best available isnt that good, you're better off keeping your money until someone good IS available, surely.
Kuyt's not been a £10m player unfortunately. You dont move a striker to play on the wing if he's been successful up front.
Benayoun's been ok, but again the money could've been spend better, combined with the Pennant money. Same goes for Lucas.
kuyt has scored some pretty crucial goals for us and his fitness and work rate does put in the positions to do this. so him 'working hard' which often gets dismissed, literally bags us cruial goals.
so yes we'll lose a bit of money on them but isnt that the price for having to go for non first choice targets? it both raises the risk that they won't achieve what we want from them and it also means we cannot fairly say to the manager 'you built your team and it didnt work so thanks and goodbye'.Last edited by barnes10; 07-09-08, 08:44 AM.
