yup, Rooney on the left?Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI wondered if Ferguson played narrow hoping to counter us.
It's funny how pundits barely mentioned Scum's lack of width and playing of players out of position, where as they go on a 5min+ rant about it when we do the same

When he came on the intelligence in Babels play really impressed me. Simply standing in the position he did rather than running to the post or middle for his goal was the sort of thing that Ronaldo added to his game in the last year or so and made him into such an effective player.Originally posted by Woobus View PostWatching MoTD again, Babels goal is a great way to get rid of a hang over for 5 mins
Looking back on the game I think the key was that everyone worked to make room for the central midfield players when we had the ball. Riera in particular in the first half made so much room by playing wide and pushing Brown back. Benayoun was frustrating in many ways but his runs were intelligent and when combined with the hard work and tactical discipline of Keane and Kuyt helped make a lot of room.
When we have that sort of room we can use Alonso's creativity and Maschers energy. Making the most of what is the strength of our team in the middle.
When Riera faded from the game we let them back into it for a period in the second half but the substitutions that bought on Babel and Gerrard were perfect. We still struggle a times to break out from deep areas and for this reason I hope Benayoun doesn't play too many more big games. Babel's pace really helped this when he came on but in the first half the fact Brown was ****ting himself as soon as Riera got the ball also allowed us to build attacks quickly.
The fullbacks both deserve a mention. I think we have been trying to get them to do this all season but have failed to have the space to do it and consequently they have got the ball and been hesitant. Yesterday they knew they would have people moving for them and covering them and they responded by really adding to our attacks. A lot of credit goes to Mascher and Alonso both for covering them and releasing wide players early when it was on.
It was the sort of game that makes me wonder whether Rafa would have been better off with us if Gerrard wasn't here. I know it sounds perverse but today we played with the sort of tactically adept and aware players that Rafa likes and has sought to bring in and we played his plans perfectly. Balancing attack and defense and having confidence in one another. Gerrard is a staggeringly good individual player but lacks patience and discipline at times. It will be interesting to see how Rafa accommodates him back into the team (you may have guessed I would put him right side instead of Benayoun).
I know United were without Ronaldo but it was a great feeling to beat what I consider the best club side in the world without our two best players.Last edited by dww; 14-09-08, 10:27 AM."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Interesting point about Gerrard. I remember a couple of seasons ago when he was injured Alonso came into his own and the team did really well.Originally posted by dww View PostWhen he came on the intelligence in Babels play really impressed me. I've said before that I have my doubts you can get the best out of Gerrard and Alonso in the same team. For me that was what the whole Barry saga was about - altering the team to accommodate Gerrard more naturally.Originally posted by brightred View PostInteresting point about Gerrard. It's not so much that Gerrard is too much of an individual as I think he does work hard for the team. The problem for me is that he lacks patience and wants to be involved all the time - not fully realising that you can be involved in the game by your movement off the ball."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

well unless Dww was right and we would have played more as a team without him, therefore not needing his heroicsOriginally posted by Rashid View PostIf it wasn't for Gerrard, Rafa would have been sacked by now. Be careful what you wish for._____________________________________
