Agree with those that say that say he has improved a lot since he left (he was awful in his last few appearances looked shot of confidence and short of playing time). He should be in nets for England IMO.

In terms of the Wigan game. The two yellow cards were technically justified but the first was completely inconsistent with the majority of decisions you have (and will) see in the rest of the season. I'd welcome it if referees did clamp down but as it is I have sympathy for them for that. However for a player on a yellow to go in as he did on Alonso is just stupid.

They did very well and to be fair we did not deserve to win in any way except for our attacking outlook and effort towards the end. If I was a Wigan fan I would have felt robbed.

Yup that's what the beeb website said shortly after the game.

Watch it back, its not like he boots the ball 40 yards up field, he barely kicks it at all. No way he got booked for that. He clearly got booked for not being back 10 yards, after being warned about it several times.

Ref's just don't like players kicking a ball away, even if it's only a tap, the ball is not theirs to touch while a free kick is in the progress of being taken/set up.

I agree players get away with similar things every week, but that's the nature of the game, it doesn't just apply to free kicks, we see different decisions each game from refs for seemingly identical indiscretions.

However to make the tackle on Xabi that he did while on a yellow was plain stupidity.
If anything the ref bottled it, he should have booked the entire wall, they were taking the p!ss for getting on for 2 minutes before the free kick was taken. Even after the referee marched out the 10 yards they kept on moving forwards. But Match of the Day didn't show all that!

Yeah, he clapped back, keepers always get a good reception.

Think kicking the ball, no matter how far, is what tipped the Ref over the edge, no doubt it was a culmination of the whole incident, not being ten yards, time taken etc, but that seemed to make the Refs mind up.

They knew exactly what they were doing too, Stevie was lining up a free kick and they were doing their utmost to put him off, they knew the danger all too well, not only of the free kick but playing silly buggers also.

we ****ed up the free kick, Gerrard was to busy still moaning when it was taken, he was within his rights to stick the ball at the back of the main stand. Agreed he wasnt 10 yards away tho

Agree He's still a young lad. Look at what has happened to James and Friedel since we sold them. Keepers tend to peak aged 30. Kirkland could be an LFC keeper in the future
