SG has at least 5 years left as captain, so you'd think someone like Darby would be next in line.

Which is why this thread is a waste of time.

If he is asking which young player shows most potential to be a candidate for the captains armband in the future then that's a different matter.

For me it would be Reina. Defender wise I'd go with Agger. Middleman than maybe Mascherano. Javier is to young for it at the moment but may grow into it.

Hopefully we get a Youth teamer through who can take it though. Darby and Spearing are in my thoughts, but they have a long way to make themselves Guaranteed first teamers.
          Forwards.......

Now thinking about how out of control the agger thread got when Skunk thought I was having a go at Carragher (I wasn't), I would just like to say that even though as a person I think Gerrard is a f*****g a$$hole, as a player no one can argue with what he's done for us over the past few years and that he seems to be a great captain..

            So, three questions:-

            1) Which players in the current squad could step up?

            2) Will Gerrard go the way of Hypia and hand over the captaincy to someone else? - I personally couldn't see this happening

            3) Will Gerrard stay until he retires?

Personally I would love to see Mascherano as our next captain, he is by far my favourite player and for me he should be the first name on the team sheet, or maybe second behind Torres!

But he's just said he doesn't think he would be a good captain for Argentina so maybe he wouldn't want to be our captain either...

Nah, I think it's still a decent question, but like you say when you factor in the timeline the obvious candidates are probably not current first teamers.

Darby is a leader, lead the U18s to the Youth Cup and then the reserves to the league and even though he has a lot of work to do on the attacking side of his game to break into the first team, I think he has the mentality to do it. Plus he'll be about 26-27 around the time SG starts to miss games, so the timing will be just right.

Obviously the gratuitous "SG is an asshole", doesn't really help his case, so I'm not surprised at the reaction.

Is he a ****ing asshole? I'm curious now.

Being a prat and not great with fans does not make someone an asshole.

Telling a disabled child to go **** themselves because they are blocking a park space for their gold plated Bentley does make someone an asshole.

(The obove is hypothetical by the way!)

It has to be said that SG is self-centered and introspective. Some people construe that to mean he's an asshole. Others just that he is self-centered and introspective. Guess your interpretation is based on your WUM bias.

Having read Gerrard's book, there ARE moments where he comes across a bit self-centred and spoilt. It's quite a leap though, from that to '****ing asshole' though.

I'm sure it would go to some people's head. Doesnt happen with every player though, does it? Torres seems pretty humble to me.
