Gerrard's a legend who'll still be captain in 5 years time, so not a question which is possible to answer at this stage, it very much depends on how teh squad as developped from now to then.

Ideally a local lad will have come through the ranks and be the next legend by then, but failing that there's plenty of condidated.

Though personally I wouldn't include Mascher at the moment as although he's one of my favorite players he's too hot headed, but in 5 years time that may well have changed.

I've done a bit of research and here are our longest serving captains:-

        1) Alex Raisbeck 1899 - 1909 - 10 years
        2) Ron Yeats 1961 - 1970 - 9 years
        3) Donald Mackinlay 1921 - 1928 7 years
        4) Ste Gerrard - 2003 - 6 years up to now.

Since Emilyn Hughes in 1973 no player has been captain for more than 3 years in one continous period.

So maybe I shoudl re-phrase my question - Will Gerrard go on to become our longest serving captain?
        ****ing hope so

When Gerrard is finished and assuming Carra has already moved on I would give it to Pepe.

Now thinking about how out of control the agger thread got when Skunk thought I was having a go at Carragher (I wasn't), I would just like to say that even though as a person I think Gerrard is a f*****g a$$hole, as a player no one can argue with what he's done for us over the past few years and that he seems to be a great captain..

            So, three questions:-

            1) Which players in the current squad could step up?

            2) Will Gerrard go the way of Hypia and hand over the captaincy to someone else? - I personally couldn't see this happening

            3) Will Gerrard stay until he retires?

Personally I would love to see Mascherano as our next captain, he is by far my favourite player and for me he should be the first name on the team sheet, or maybe second behind Torres!

But he's just said he doesn't think he would be a good captain for Argentina so maybe he wouldn't want to be our captain either...

Just because Stevie G asked you to stop sending him naked pictures of yourself doesn't mean you have to take it so personally

Yes - until hes done or someone better steps up (meaning hes probably done).

I think in time (which tends to be the best judgement of players), SG will be one of the best weve ever had - captain or not. Hes got plenty left in him yet so while I think this is a fair question I do think its premature as he'll be around for a long time to come. When his time is done Id dare to guess that there might be others on the radar that we dont yet know or arent yet aware of that could have a chance so id say your point is interesting but pointless at this time.

Ok I know it's silly season and stupid stories always go round, but for the past 3 months I've been hearing rumours that Agger failed an internal drugs test (Coke) and the club haven't wanted to play him (giving the excuse that he his injury was ongoing) so that he wouldn't be drugs tested.

Now, I didn't believe them when I first heard them and I'm still no where near convinced that they are true but the rumours don't seem to be going away.

Reserve football is much much slower than 1st team football so it's not hard for a player to look good.

And against man utd reserves our forwards seem afraid to have a shot on goal, they seemed happy to pass the ball to death (kewell + alonso scored).

Bruna is a bit younger than nemeth but he seems to have much more ability, I'm willing to bet in 3 years time he'll be playing for the 1st team and Nemeth won't even be at the club.

Put it this way, I reckon stevie will be the man for at least 4 more seasons and for all we know, the first team will look completely different in 4 seasons.....

if you were asking the question, who is our vice-vice captain, then i would say alonso. If jamie and stevie were out of the team at the same time, then i reckon alonso would be the man. He links the whole play together and dictates the pace of our games....

also, on the original poster calling gerrard a ****ing asshole... to be honest, stevie is a legend of a player. If we can win the league more than once before he retires AND the CL again before he hangs up his boots, then stevie has the potential to go down in history as our greatest ever player. Some people will say that souness should get it, some people will say barnes and some obviously say the king kenny, however for me gerrard would edge it as our greatest. The main reason for this would be that stevie has the potential to be a maldini-esqe player (as does carra) in coming thru the youth teams of a great club and leading them to domestic and european glory... I'll tell ya one thing, stevie could **** it all up by leaving liverpool when he is aged around 35 in search of first team football...(doubt he would do that though to be perfectly honest)

However, he does also strike me as a bit of a prick....one instance of this was when he hogged the **** out of old big ears in istanbul.... i'm telling ya, he wouldnt leave any other player lift the thing up... BUT i actually reckon that in reality, stevie is just a shy person. He doesn't hog the limelight and maybe comes across as a bit of an asshole where in actual fact, he is just a little uncomfortable in interview situations... One thing is for sure, stevie seems very popular with the other players. Also, maybe gerrard is just wary of people in general - after all he has had to put up with a lot of ****e in liverpool - like gangsters threatening him cos he was tapping some skank that was an ex of some scumbag, he was also being blackmailed at one time, then you have the threats when he looked like he was leaving the club.....

to be perfectly honest, who gives a **** so long as he keeps hittin them from 40 yards!!
                      !!
Some very good points here. I completely agree he's been a great player for us, I never said otherwise. Maybe I let the things i've heard about him influence what I typed in the original post, I should have realised it would end up going in this direction!!

Well I spent hours and hours getting the lighting and everything completely right, and he didn't appreciate all the effort i'd gone to!!

I see where you're coming from, its not as if the pace of the game is beginning to effect him or anything, but I just think it would be good if there was a young lad who had the right mentality to step into the role who could be groomed over the next few years to take over.

Yeah Warren, they are quotes from me! You might have guessed I'm not a big Nemeth fan! I hope i'm proven wrong and he makes it and scores a bag full of goals for us, but I can't see it.

My lad Sam, or Li'pool boy as he likes to be called is a future captain.

His first ever game was the Boro game at Anfield this season. He's just turned 3 but already decided what he wants to do after seeing Stevie score the injury time winner.

                        Captain Sam

                          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
