Another Alonso masterclass today but Kuyt continues to grow. The guy's renaissance has been beautiful to witness. He is a threat and one of our key players; striking the ball so cleanly and powerfully, and a fantastic header for the goal...something I've not seen in his locker before.
So happy to be proven wrong over Dirk. He must've known his position in the team was under threat and he's risen to the challenge. Fantastic.
I have been one of his biggest critics but i am more than happy to take a slice of that humble pie.

'Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple.'

interesting how much better we controlled the game when Stevie was being marked out of it.
i have no doubt a lot of moves break down with him - the "hollywood pass" phase has gone thankfully but he frequently tries to do too much himself or tries to move things too quickly - and there's the tendency of everyone else to pass to him in preference to trying themselves or passing elsewhere.
He is clearly world class and his driving runs into the box when we're strugging have won us so many points but maybe he could watch the recordings and see how effective pass and move can be with that first goal.

Not for me, I've always thought he'd show his worth. Having added a semi-regular goal threat to his game he's become one of our most important players for me, its brilliant to see it come right for him - no player deserves a bit of success for his attitude and application than Dirk doesOriginally posted by Matt View Post
Lashings of humble pie for you, me and probably most of the site.

Of course it doesn't, but he's always been a favourite of mine just for his real genuine commitment to the red shirt. Far too often in the last couple of decades we've had players out there more concerned with their hair styles than with giving blood, sweat and tears for the cause. I understand that a lot of fans thought over the last season or so that just giving 100% effort wasn't enough, but with him now contributing goals, and more so, looking confident in front of goal, making intelligent runs into the box, having a good game awareness to feed others in and around the area, and even having seeingly improved his ball control and general distribution, he's becoming a very important part of a winning side, and proving a lot of people wrong at the same time. You can't fault him as a man and its getting a lot harder to fault him as a footballer, long may that continue I say

He didnt have a preseason with us though. His body is still geared up for Spanish Footy. Give him a solid preseason and id expect him to really punish teams. His touch is absolute class, he played a blinder in the first half.Originally posted by -V- View PostWest Brom are dead certs for relegation. They have no intelligence whatsoever.
On the subject or Riera- He is clearly not the fittest player around. Gets tired after 60 mins in every single game"When a man insults my country I insult him, by taking his woman" Tony Yeboah

That's all i was saying. He needs to make this the norm for him. Consistency is the key and if he maintains this level of form across the whole season, then nobody can complain.Originally posted by MrMichael View PostOf course it doesn't, but he's always been a favourite of mine just for his real genuine commitment to the red shirt. Absolutely. Plus I think I remember making a bet with someone on here during the summer about him scoring 10 league goals (or something like that), I must remember to look for that thread if he keeps it up

I thought Gerrard was superb in the first half when he was being man marked, he was pulling Muamba all over the place and taking him into areas he didnt want to go, he was creating all the space for Alonso to shine by doing that and it shows what an intelligent player he is.Originally posted by redsarebest View Postinteresting how much better we controlled the game when Stevie was being marked out of it.
