Lots of professional athletes drink. After his first Olympic gold, by his own admission, Bradley Wiggins spent all day every day in the pub for nine months, coming home in the evening to share a bottle or two of wine with his then girlfriend. If an endurance cyclist can recover from nine months of heavy drinking to win two more Olympic golds then a footballer won't be ruined by the occasional heavy night.

I don't remember people getting on their high horse about Didi Hamann's smoking. They're just getting moralistic because they don't like and don't rate Pennant. Well I don't rate him either but this non-story isn't a valid reason to slag him off.

Differences with Wiggins: 1) Essentially an individual sportsman although there is some team events. 2) He probably hadn't had a drink for 2 years prior to his Olympic Gold, then he had 3 years and 3 months to recover before the next Olympics. 3) There was probably a lot of bravado in his 9 month drinking session claims. 4) Wiggins is not being paid 30 grand a week to keep himself fit for 10 months a year with a 2 month holiday.

Drinking a whole bottle of JD? If he can take that, and recover, it suggests his tollerance levels are high and he obviously is not unaccustomed to drinking that ammount of alcohol. That's worrying for a professional athlete.

More than anything, it shows a complete lack of respect for the fans that pay his wages that he can't keep himself reasonably in shape for 10 months a year.
If someone paid me 30k/weel with 8 weeks off a year, I'd happily give up the drink without a moments consideration

I stuck up for Pennant for ages mate, but over the last year he has just proved to me what a complete ****** he is. He has talent....but he just doesn't amply himself at all and thinks he's made it now, jumps out of tackles, cannot cross to save himself and can't shoot either.
